Women’s Tennis Wins on Senior Day over Barton, 5-2

Lancers sweep doubles, take four singles matches

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Barton at the Lancer Courts on Sunday.

Longwood (5-9) swept doubles play and then took four singles matches, including three in straight sets, to defeat the Bulldogs (10-4).

"Today's match for the women was a good showing of what the team is capable of," said Longwood head coach Carlos Lora. "We had some very solid matches all throughout the lineup that we were able to pull out our way.  Now we are looking forward to the few matches that we have this week to continue building."

Nina Hederich and Sophia Marchetta opened doubles action with a 6-0 win against Ruya Mavi and Leonie Hellum-Lilleengen on court three. Phoebe Mitchell and Karina Rizvanova then beat Tilde Howeler and Irma Granstam, 6-4, at No. 1. Feline van Eijkelenburg and Oriana Izarra closed doubles action on court two with another 6-4 decision over Silvia Fernandez-Trabadelo and Alexandra Saez Lozano.

Howeler topped van Eijkelenburg, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to knot the match at 1-1, but the Lancers clinched the match, winning the next three encounters. Mitchell defeated Mavi, 7-5, 6-1, on No. 3, Rizvanova beat Saez Lozano, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Marchetta dispatched Hellum-Lilleengen, 6-4, 6-1, on court four.

Izarra then defeated Fernandez-Trabadelo, 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 before Claudia Zaratiegui Marquez outlasted Hederich, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 (8) for the final margin.

Prior to the match, Longwood celebrated its three seniors — Zoe Barton, Hederich and Marchetta.
