Four-Run Fifth Propels USC Upstate to Sweep of Lancers

Shaw two-run homer give Spartans lead

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Carson Shaw drilled a 1-0 pitch from Maggie Chapin over the fence in right-center field with two out in the fifth to lift USC Upstate to a 5-3 win over the Longwood softball team in Big South Conference action at Cyrill Stadium Saturday.

The Spartans, who completed a three-game sweep of Longwood with the victory, tied the game just two pitches earlier as Celeste DeLorenzo drew a five-pitch walk and kept running. She rounded first base, getting into a rundown, which allowed Denver Lauer to sneak in with a steal of home.

USC Upstate (18-15, 7-2 Big South) battled back from an early 3-0 deficit, cobbling a single run in the bottom of the fourth prior to the decisive four-run fifth inning.

Chapin was in control into the frame, not allowing a hit and just three baserunners to that point before Taliyah Thomas beat a bouncer on the middle of the infield and stole second. Abigail Pippen followed with a single to left field, plating Thomas, to get the Spartans on the scoreboard.

With two out in the fifth and a Amie Johnson on second after a single and wild pitch, Lauer singled up the middle. The ball got away from Emily Vinson in center, allowing Johnson to score and cut the lead to 3-2.

Longwood (11-24, 4-5) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off of Upstate starter Sierra Maness. Lauren Fox led off the game with a single to third on the first pitch and Lauren Taylor was hit by the next offering. Then with one out, Sophia Knock singled to shortstop to load the bases. Senior Korynna Anderson then lined a double to right, scoring Fox and Taylor for the lead. After Vinson grounded out, Maggie Hiatt reached on an error at third base that plated Knock for the three-run lead.

The Lancers loaded the bases again in the top of the fourth, but were unable to score. Vinson singled to right center, Avery Drake singled up the middle with two out and Fox reached on an error — again at third — but Maness induced a Taylor flyball to center, ending the threat.

Maness improved to 10-6 on the season with her second complete-game victory in as many days. She scattered five hits and two earned runs and struck out two without a walk in 85 pitches. Chapin fell to 11-12 overall, giving up five hits, five earned runs and three walks. She fanned two and threw 94 pitches.

Fox, Knock, Anderson, Vinson and Drake picked up the Lancers' hits, while Anderson drove in a pair of runs.

The Lancers return to the diamond Wednesday at North Carolina in a 5 p.m., game on ACC Network Extra.
