Lancers Sweep Softball Doubleheader from Winthrop

Chapin earns win and save; Burton claims her first of the year

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood softball team earned its first doubleheader sweep in Big South Conference play Saturday, beating Winthrop 2-0 and 6-3 at Lancer Field on Saturday.

Longwood improved to 13-25 overall and 6-5 in the league, leapfrogging the Eagles (18-23, 5-6) in the conference standings into third place, a half game behind Charleston Southern.

"Proud of our fight and grit. Two very different types of games, and it took the whole team for both games," said Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown. "Excited for the growth."

Sophomore right-hander Maggie Chapin spun her sixth complete-game shutout of the season in the opener and fired two hitless innings in support of junior righty Er'ron Burton. The Suffolk, Va., native sniped her first win of the season with three scoreless innings out off the bullpen, improving to 1-8 on the year.

Offensively, Longwood banged out 14 hits on the day, including five for extra bases, in the sweep. Senior Kayley DeVivi hit a first-inning solo home run to left center to give Longwood an early lead in game two. The blast was the seventh of the season for DeVivi, who is now tied for the team lead in the category with Sophia Knock. The Lancers also added three doubles and a triple.

Chapin (12-13) allowed four singles and two walks, while striking out three in the first game. Vinson led off the bottom of the second with the triple to the gap in right center off Winthrop's Reese Basinger (9-11). Vinson scampered home with two outs on a passed ball.

The Lancers doubled the lead as Maggie Hiatt drove the Eagles' center fielder all the way back to the wall. Ashton Vanhouse could not make the play and pinch runner Peyton Coleman scored from second, following a stolen base.

Lauren Fox, DeVivi, Vinson, Avery Miller and Hiatt collected hits for the Lancers in the first game.

Emma Jackson doubled home KaDedra Temple in the top of the second inning of game two, and three batters later, Peyton Rivas beat a throw from second base, allowing Jackson to come around with two outs for a 2-1 lead.

Longwood responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame when the Lancers loaded the bases on a Hiatt hit by pitch, Kate Westmiller single and Fox walk. Lauren Taylor followed with a single of her own to second base, tying the game, before DeVivi coaxed a walk, making it 3-2.

Winthrop tied it in the third with a Temple homer to right off of Cierra Gawryluk, paving the way for Burton's entrance. She worked out of a first-and-third, one-out jam in the fourth with consecutive strikeouts  to keep a 5-3 lead that Avery Drake provided with a line-drive double to center that played both Vinson and Korynna Anderson.

The Lancers added an unearned run in the fifth for the final margin.

Drake and Knock went 2-for-3 while Vinson had two hits in four at-bats.

Megan Powell (6-8) absorbed the loss in three innings, allowing five earned runs, six hits and three walks.

The Lancers aim for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m., on ESPN+.
