Lancers Claim Season Sweep of Charleston Southern, 63-56

Three in double figures help Longwood to Saturday win

FARMVILLE, Va. – Junior guard Kiki McIntyre scored a team-high 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting, adding five rebounds, three steals and two assists, to lead the Longwood women's basketball team to a 63-56 Big South Conference victory over Charleston Southern at the Joan Perry Brock Center Saturday.

McIntyre, who paced a group of three Lancers in double figures, helped Longwood (6-16, 3-6 Big South) complete a regular-season series sweep of Charleston Southern (7-15, 4-5) for the first time since Feb. 12-13, 2021 at Willett Hall. The Lancers have now claimed eight of the last nine games against the Buccaneers overall, winning on a day that a bevy of former Longwood players were honored as part of Alumnae Day festivities.

"That program, coach [Clarisse White]'s done a really good job of building and finding the right pieces to help them be successful and so for us to get a win over that team after they're coming off a big win the other night against Radford really says a lot," said Longwood head coach Erika Lang Montgomery of CSU. "So, I'm just really proud of our team and the fight that they had today. That was the two things that I wrote on the board is 'who will you fight for?' And 'what will you fight for?' And so today tells me that we're still fighting for something."

The Lancers held a 35-33 advantage at halftime and carried it through the finish line despite a late charge from CSU. Longwood limited the Bucs to just seven points in the third quarter for separation and led by as many as 10 with less than eight minutes remaining.

"I really was proud of our intensity and how we set the tone for the second half," said Lang-Montgomery. "That was a big third quarter for us just because we had come out flat sometimes before. So, to hold a team that can score like that to seven points, I thought we were really, really intentional with our defense."

The Lancers forced 16 Charleston Southern turnovers and earned a 46-45 rebounding edge in the game that was tight in the early stages. The first half featured seven lead changes and three tie scores.

The Bucs led, 21-14, with 7:47 on the clock in the second quarter before Janay Turner scored five consecutive points with a three-point play and layup in transition in a 30-second span to close the gap. She finished with 15 points and four rebounds after surviving an injury scare in the fourth quarter.

Longwood took a 28-27 lead on a Malea Brown driving layup at the 4:25 left before the break. Charleston Southern later tied it at 33-all prior to a Turner layup in the closing seconds to put LU on top.

Down 56-44 with 3:40 remaining, Charleston Southern rattled off seven straight points. A McIntyre 3-pointer with 37.1 seconds on the clock halted the momentum, making it 59-51 Longwood.

Junior guard Adriana Shipp-Davis scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds and was the third Longwood player in double digits. Charleston Southern's Kennedi Jackson led all players with 20 points and game-high-tying nine rebounds while Madison Adamson chipped in 15 points and six boards for the Bucs.

In addition to Alumnae Day, the Lancers also took part in the annual Play4Kay Pink Out to benefit the Kay Yow Fund, which raises awareness of all cancers affecting women.

"This was a great celebration day and a great motivational day," said Lang-Montgomery. "It was nice to have our alumnae back on campus, just for them to see the changes that have happened at Longwood, to see this arena – some of them seeing it for the first time – so that was really cool. And then obviously our Play4Kay day. So, it's an opportunity to shift some focus to those that are in a fight against … cancer and bring some awareness there."

Next, Longwood is back on the road Wednesday at USC Upstate. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
