GREENVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore right-hander
Maggie Chapin struck out a career-high nine, scattering six hits and the Longwood softball team dealt East Carolina its first loss of the season, 5-2, Sunday in the opening game of a Sunday doubleheader at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Â
The Lancers (3-8) outhit ECU (11-1), 8-6, in the nightcap, but dropped a 6-0 decision, finishing the Pirate Clash 2-3.
Â
Chapin spun her second consecutive complete game with 99 pitches in the opener, allowing just one earned run, improving to 3-3 on the year.
Â
Longwood scored five times in the top of the third, keyed by a
Kayley DeVivi double to the left-center field gap that scored
Emily Vinson and
Lauren Fox with one out. After a walk to
Sophia Knock, ECU starter Jordan Hatch allowed
Korynna Anderson to reach on a fielding error and DeVivi scored the go-ahead run on Hatch's throwing error in the same sequence.
Â
Pinch runner
Peyton Coleman then made it 4-0, scoring on a sacrifice bunt by
Lauren Taylor, before Taylor stole second and Anderson scored on a third error in the frame for a 5-0 advantage.
Â
Chapin surrendered an RBI double to Morgan Johnson in the bottom of the sixth with pinch runner Kaleigh Ayscue also scoring on an error on the play as the Pirates made it, 5-2. Chapin, however, shut the door in the seventh to ensure the victory.
Â
DeVivi went 2-for-3 with the double, run scored and two driven in for the first game, finishing the weekend 4-for-14 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBIs.
Â
Fox was 2-for-4 at the top of the lineup with a run scored, while
Avery Drake (second- inning triple) and Vinson -- who doubled prior to DeVivi's two-bagger – also collected extra-base hits in the win.
Â
Hatch (5-1) took the loss for ECU in the circle, allowing all five runs (two earned) in three innings.
Â
The Pirates scored on a flyball double play in the first inning of game two against junior
Er'ron Burton (0-4), adding three in the third and two more in the fourth to salvage a doubleheader split. Burton went 3 2/3 innings before giving way to freshman lefty
Cierra Gawryluk, who threw a hitless 2 1/3 with two strikeouts to finish the day.
Â
Eight different Lancers recorded hits – all singles – but ECU pitchers Addy Bullis (3-0) and Taylor Apple combined to strand all nine Longwood baserunners.
Â
With the split, the Lancers move to 9-12 all-time against East Carolina.
Â
Longwood is back in action at Auburn's Plainsman Invitational, starting Friday. The Lancers play five games against Northern Iowa, the Tigers and Southeast Missouri at Jane B. Moore Field.
