RICHMOND, Va. — Three Longwood men's tennis players defeated their first-round opponents in the singles draw on day one of Richmond's River City Tennis Open Friday.
All three doubles pairs competing also won the matches to advance to round of 16 in that draw.
In singles action, Mauricio Gonzalez Paiva defeated Benedict Badza of Hampton, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-3, Timeo Puech topped Donte Armbrister, also from Hampton, 6-2, 6-3 and Marko Mrdak beat the Pirates' Tadej Mihajlovic, 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles, Puech and Mrdak teamed to dispatch Hampton's Marko Stoilkovski and Badza, 6-2, Petar Belosevic and Gonzalez Paiva bested Yanozie Amadike and Mihajlovic of Hampton, 6-4, and Seva Rusin and Gary Huang made quick work of Navy's George Cutone and Charlie Spencer, 6-1.
