HOW IT HAPPENED:
While the score read perfect for Longwood men's tennis, the opening doubles matches were certainly not freebies. The duo of
Guillermo Cagigas and
Luis Reis dropped the opening match followed by a win from
Yoav Weinberg and Timeo Puech at No. 2 to force a tiebreaking match at No. 3. It came all the way to a seventh point tiebreaker, but
Gary Huang and
Alejandro Uribe held on to claim Longwood's first point.
Weinberg got things started for the Lancers with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory at No. 1, and his loss in the second set was Longwood's only one on the day. From here on out, Longwood controlled the rest of the dual.
Timeo Puech earned his decision after a 6-0 win in the first set followed by a retirement in the second.
Alejandro Uribe and
Luis Reis conceded a combined three points, leading to two victories at No. 3 and 4 for Longwood.
The freshman pair of
Gary Huang and
Ryan Foster rounded out singles play for the Lancers, each earning a win to solidify Longwood's sweep. For Foster, it was his first ever collegiate match and win.
On the women's side, the pairings of
Emma Nurgazieva/
Karina Rizvanova and
Maria Saez/
Nina Hederich both earned closely contested victories, which led the way for a
Zoe Barton/
Wiktoria Czerny default win to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, Longwood continued its dominance, conceding three points across the four matches that were played.
Sophia Marchetta opened at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-0 win, setting the tone for the rest of the dual.
Rizvanova completed a clean sweep at No. 2 followed by a 6-0, 6-1 win from Hederich at No. 3.
Zoe Barton earned a 6-1 win in the first set of her match and picked up a victory due to her opponent retiring. Longwood earned default wins at No. 5 and 6, and the Lancers' second 7-0 win of the day was complete.
