HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancer men fell in doubles play to open the day's matches, dropping decisions at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots while the No. 1 team of
Guillermo Cagigas and
Luis Reis' match did not finish.
In singles play, Longwood competed all the way to the final set. Cagigas dropped a closely-contested match at the No. 1 spot, with the second set needing a seventh point to win.
Yoav Weinberg followed at No. 2, picking up an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory for Longwood's first point of the day.
Timeo Puech's match at No. 3 did not finish, but he certainly was on his way when the match was called. Puech dropped the first set 6-3, but bounced back with a 6-2 win in set two and was leading 5-0 before his match was concluded.
Alejandro Uribe played his match to a similar tune at No. 5, losing the first set 6-3 before responding with a 6-3 win and was leading 3-2 in the third set when his match was called due to Coastal Carolina's clinch.
The Lancer women fell in their opening doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 2, leading to the No. 3 pairing of
Sophia Marchetta and
Wiktoria Czerny to have their match stopped with the score four sets apiece.
While the Lancers won several sets in the opening three matches of singles play, a strong Coastal Carolina team was able to come away with three opening victories.
Karina Rizvanova claimed Longwood's point in a thrilling 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4 that needed a third set to determine the winner. However, Czerny would drop a close 3-6, 4-6 result at No. 5 that sealed the win for the Chanticleers and cause
Nina Hederich's singles match at No. 6 to end unfinished.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"The guys fought with everything they had and left it all on the court," said Longwood Director of Tennis Adam Jackson on the men's dual. "If we can play with this much heart all the time, good things are in store for this team."
"The girls were outmatched today by a very strong Coastal Carolina team," said Jackson. "We found ways to compete in the lower lines though and improved from yesterday."
