HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Longwood (6-18, 5-8) and Presbyterian (10-14, 6-7), who entered the night tied at 5-7 in the Big South, were both in need of a win with the Big South Championships next month on the horizon. Although
Adriana Shipp-Davis knocked down a triple on the game's first possession, the Blue Hose showed out with an array of threes throughout the frame. Presbyterian hit six in total for the quarter, and the Lancers found themselves playing catch-up as a result.
Trailing by six headed into the second quarter, Longwood put on an offense showcase of their own in the frame. The Lancers shot 52.9% from the field and 57.1% from three in the quarter on route to a 38-34 halftime lead. Several highlight plays got the Lancers faithful in attendance on their feet, including a flashy euro-step from
Chardonnay Hartley, multiple deep
Adriana Shipp-Davis triples, and assists from
Bailey Williams, who finished with a career-high nine on the night.
From there, the game began to slow down on both sides, as fouls and physical play dictated the pace rather than hot shooting. The tide would turn around the midway point of the quarter for the Blue Hose, who garnered a seven-point advantage with just under four minutes to play.
Anne-Hamilton LeRoy, along with contributions from Shipp-Davis and Hartley, helped Longwood pull to within two points just before the end of the quarter.
The Lancers and the Blue Hose traded buckets in the first, as each team held a lead to go along with four scores tied in the opening minutes. Presbyterian's efficient shooting down the stretch in the fourth quarter helped seal the victory for them in a game that was tightly contested the whole way through. Longwood has now split the season series against the Blue Hose and now has an opportunity to do the same against High Point this upcoming Saturday. They'll be back at Willett Hall for this weekend's contest, where the Lancers are 4-1 in their last five at home.
Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
Â
"
Adriana Shipp-Davis puts a lot of time in the gym working on her shot, so it was nice to see those threes go down for her," said head coach
Erika Lang-Montgomery. "And for
Bailey Williams to have nine assists and only one turnover is really impressive. It's unfortunate that it was overshadowed by a loss tonight."
"We played very aggressive in the second quarter, I liked the intensity that we had defensively," said Lang-Montgomery. "Now as we close out the season, we've got to continue to take pride in that defense and that has to be our cornerstone every single night. We are definitely capable, but just have to have that desire to do it for forty minutes."
"High Point is similar to Presbyterian in that they pride themselves on shooting the three ball, so we really have to guard the three and decide that we're going to defend," said Lang-Montgomery on this upcoming Saturday's matchup. "Our defensive pressure is what's going to set the tone for the game. Not necessarily in the full-court, but in the half-court as well."
