WACO, Texas – The Getterman Classic continued today from Waco, as Longwood squared up against the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks and the hosting (RV) Baylor Bears. The Lancers got the better of the Ladyjacks 7-4, but dropped a 7-0 decision to Baylor later in the day.
Leigha Hill got the call to start the day against SFA, but the win would ultimately go to
Er'ron Burton, who pitched 5.2 innings against the Ladyjacks in relief of Hill.
Maggie Chapin opened the game for the Lancers against Baylor, throwing four innings before Burton and
Reggie Kanagawa entered from the bullpen.
Similar to Longwood's victory over Army yesterday, the opposing team struck first, as the Ladyjacks sent a run home in the top of the first. The Lancers responded adequately, scoring all seven of their runs in the first three innings.
Lindsey Hay got things started in the bottom of the first off of an RBI single, her first of two on the day. The Lancers exploded for four runs in the second thanks to a bases loaded walk and RBIs from
Lauren Taylor,
Kayley DeVivi and Hay. Longwood capped off its scoring on the day in the third when
Jaden Pone sent
Kate Westmiller and
Kelly Park home off of a huge 2RBI double.
Er'ron Burton held it down inside the circle in relief of
Leigha Hill, striking out five and only allowing two runs across the plate to help Longwood seal the victory.
"I'm very proud of our fight against a tough team in Stephen F. Austin today," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "We talk a lot about scoring throughout the game, so I was pleased to see that this morning."
Longwood then shifted its focus to Baylor, the fourth Power 5 opponent the Lancers have faced in the young 2023 campaign. The game was closely contested through the first four innings, as Longwood trailed 2-0 despite Baylor only holding a one-hit advantage over the Lancers (2 to 3).
The bats came alive for the Bears in the fifth and sixth, scoring the majority of their runs in the latter half of the game. Baylor's late push put the game out of reach for Longwood, who would split their two games at the Getterman Classic for the second consecutive day.
"Playing tough teams is a refining process," said Dr. Brown on the loss to Baylor. "To be our very best, we have to continue to refine our skills and resilience."
Longwood concludes play at the Getterman Classic tomorrow at 11 a.m. in a rematch with Army. The Lancers will then battle Virginia, George Washington, and Howard at the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia next Thursday and Friday.
"We need to come out strong and play well for seven innings tomorrow," said Dr. Brown ahead of Sunday's tilt against Army. "Need to keep the focus on our team and playing Longwood softball."
