HAMPTON, Va. – Longwood earned themselves another weekend Big South sweep against Hampton, extending its win streak and record in the conference after a shutout on Sunday.
Â
Longwood (16-18, 9-3 Big South) took the win 4-0 Sunday afternoon over the Pirates, placing the team currently in second across the Big South. The team tallied three more wins on the road, with game three owned by the Lancers in comfortable fashion after grabbing another early lead that withheld for the whole game.

Top of the second, senior
Alexis Wayland got things started with a double down the left field line. Following up,
Korynna Anderson reached first on a perfectly placed bunt, advancing Wayland to third on a throwing error over to first.
Â
Bases loaded with one out,
Sydney Jacobsen grabbed a hit scoring one on the play, advancing all the runners. Another single from center fielder
Lauren Fox gave Longwood the 2-0 lead with only one out recorded. Big South Freshman of the week also added a hit on the inning grabbing her seventh RBI of the season scoring one more, leaving it 3-0 to end the second.
Â
Sophomore Kayley Devivi added another solo homerun on the year Sunday afternoon, her third dinger of the season giving the Lancers the 4-0 lead which would hold for the rest of the afternoon.
Â
On the other side of the ball for Longwood, ace in the circle
Sydney Backstrom (12-9) added to her momentum she's been building on all season long. The super senior, again tied her single-game strikeout record of 13, allowing only two hits in her complete game Sunday.
"Good finish to a good weekend," said Head Coach Megan Brown. "Proud of their fight and hard work. Feels like the pieces are coming together at just the right time of year."
Â
Longwood grabbed another win that started with an early game lead, continuing a trend they have built on so far this season. Hampton (13-23, 3-9 Big South) unable to get anything going offensively against the Lancers ace, only grabbed two hits on the day. Emily Workman grabbed the start and tallied the loss for Hampton after allowing 14 hits on 34 batters she faced.
Â
Longwood returns to the diamond on Wednesday for a midweek game at NC State at 5 p.m.
