BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Harvard rolled passed Longwood in the Farmville native team's final outing of the Green and Gold Classic in Birmingham, Alabama Sunday morning, 5-1.
Â
A multiple-run third and sixth inning for the Pilgrims, led Harvard right passed the Lancers straight to victory.
"Has been a tough pre-conference schedule in preparation for a tough Big Sound conference," said Head Coach Megan Brown. "Lots of lessons learned, lots of work still to do."
Â
Starting in the circle for Harvard was Lindsay Poulos, but it was Briana Jewett who cleaned things up and grabbed the win for the west coast opponent. The two pitchers combined for only two strikeouts, allowing five hits off Lancer bats. It was the strong line of defense backing the player's in the circle, which helped seal the deal, allowing only one run to complete a trip around the bases. Â
Â
Bottom of the third, it was an error by the Lancer shortstop
Lauren Taylor that allowed Allison Heffley to start the rally for the west coasters. Trina Hoang was able to cross home plate evening the score on an unearned run in the bottom of the third.
Â
Following that mistake by Longwood, all the scoring was left in Harvard's favor. A single to center field off the bat of Morgan Melito allowed Heffley to advance to second with Megan Welsh crossing home plate.
Â
Back-to-back-to-back mistakes in the sixth inning gave Harvard three more unearned runs off passed balls through senior
Alexis Wayland.
Â
With little light to follow on offense, Longwood as a team went 5-25 on the day with
Emily Vinson earning the lone RBI, batting in teammate
Sydney Guess in the top of the second. Getting on the board early would not hold, and the Lancers were served their fourth loss of the weekend.
Â
Longwood kicks off Big South play next weekend. The team will be on the road, yet again, traveling to Spartanburg to play a series against USC Upstate. The team is set for a double header on Friday Mar. 11, beginning at 1 p.m. The third game of the series will pick back up on Saturday Mar. 12 at 1 p.m.
