Purdue Wins In 13 Inning Thriller Against Longwood

Lancers lose a heartbreaker to the Boilermakers

Holly Springs, N.C- The Purdue Boilermakers defeated the Longwood Lancers in 13 innings on a walk off single. The dramatic victory brings Purdue's record to a perfect 11-0.

The Boilermakers were led by Troy Viola offensively. The grad student had a four hit day that featured a double, a home run and two RBI. Viola also played a role in the 13th inning rally when he singled to centerfield advancing Jake Jarvis from second, to third.

Longwood struck first in the first and second innings through a Hayden Harris double and a throwing error by the Boilermakers third basemen. The Lancers would add to their lead when Eliot Dix singled home Hunter Gilliam in the top half of the fifth inning.

Purdue would respond in the home half of the fifth inning with back-to-back home runs from Viola and Pablo Lanzarote.

The Boilermakers would claim their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the eighth inning through a Cam Thompson single that scored Tanner Haston.

The Lancers would not go down easy however, and in the top of the ninth Keondre Shelton would make it home after a wild pitch, which sent the game to extras.

The first two frames were scoreless for both sides in the extended game. In the 12th inning, Jack Schnell would give the lead back to Longwood when he singled up the middle, scoring Harris.

Purdue would load the bases with two outs in their half of the 12th, and ultimately tied the game when Powers was hit by a pitch.

In the bottom of the 13th inning Purdue got runners to second and third. Jake Stadler would then single to right field and end the game.

The Lancers were led offensively by Eliot Dix, Hayden Harris and Jack Schnell. The trio combined for eight of the 14 Longwood hits and had one RBI a-piece.

Freshman Kevin Warunek started on the mound for the Lancers and went four and a third innings. The southpaw gave up three runs on five hits and struck out three. Logan Berrier came on in relief and went 3.2 innings surrendering just one run on two hits and struck out four. Nick Karlinchak appeared late and received his first loss of the season.

"We have to continue to believe in the process," said head coach Chad Oxendine following the loss. "Continue to learn how to win baseball games and trust that all the work we are putting in will pay off."

The Lancers play in the series finale against Purdue tomorrow at noon.
