HOW IT HAPPENED:

Janay Turner opened the scoring for Longwood (1-9), hitting a layup on the game's first possession. The Lancers were active defensively to begin the quarter, generating three William & Mary (5-5) turnovers on route to an early 6-5 lead. Both teams did a great job distributing the wealth, as five players scored in the first for both the Lancers and the Tribe. After a closely contested first, Longwood held an 18-17 advantage.

Longwood again scored on its opening possession in the second quarter, this time via an Adriana Shipp-Davis triple. The Lancers continued to apply defensive pressure, generating turnovers and turning those opportunities into points. Longwood began the frame on a 13-3 run through the first five minutes of play. However, the Tribe wouldn't go away easy, responding with an 8-2 run of their own to set the score at 33-28 at the half in favor of the Lancers.

William & Mary appeared to be playing with a sense of urgency to open the second half, retaking the lead and extending it to ten at one point in the frame. However, Longwood kept the deficit in single digits at the end of the quarter thanks to buckets from Janay Turner, Brooke Anya, and Adriana Shipp-Davis.

The game remained close in the fourth quarter, as Longwood came climbing back to cut the lead to four with only four minutes remaining in the game. As time was running low, William & Mary's Sydney Wagner was huge for the Tribe, scoring eight of her team's final nine points to secure a 67-57 victory.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We've talked a lot about having pride in our defense, so that really was a focal point of the game," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery on her team's defensive urgency to start the game. "We wanted to limit William & Mary's opportunities and shut them down as much as we could."

"[Adriana] wants to put the work in and be a scorer for us, she's a player that comes in before practice and stays after to get up those extra shots up," said Lang-Montgomery on Adriana Shipp-Davis. "She's a constant student of the game and it was great to see it pay off for her tonight."

"We've got to have a quick bounce back, there's not a lot of days in between [during the season]," said Lang-Montgomery on the team's quick turnaround. "We've got to shift our focus and get ready for a very good East Tennessee State team on Tuesday night."
