Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood heads to Winthrop for the second three-game series between the two teams this season. The Lancers hosted the Eagles back in March for their conference home opener.
  • The Lancers have won five of their past seven games, sweeping a three game series against Radford coupled with wins against High Point and UNC Asheville. The two lone losses were one-run affairs on the road.
  • In the seven-game stretch, Longwood is hitting .328 as a team while tallying at least 10 hits in six of the seven games. The Lancers are averaging nearly seven runs per game.
  • The Longwood offense ranks third in the Big South in hits ((387) and fourth in RBI (218) and runs scored (243).
  • Corbin McCloud posted his first multi-hit game of his Longwood career, going 4-4 at the plate against High Point while scoring twice and driving in three runs. It was the sixth time a Lancer has had at least 4 hits in a game.
  • Longwood's pitching staff is third in the Big South in strikeouts with 342 and second in strikeouts looking (96). The staff has finished in the top three of the league four times in head coach Ryan Mau's six prior seasons at the helm.

Last Time Out

  • Corbin McCloud powered Longwood past High Point 8-1 in the team's final midweek game of the season. The freshman catcher went 4-4 at the plate, his first multi-hit game of his college career, and the bottom third of Longwood's order totaled six hits and five runs scored. Andrew Potojecki tossed five innings of one-run ball to earn the win on the mound.

  • Longwood is third in the Big South with 387 base hits, and the team is fifth with a .267 batting average. The team has posted a season-high 15 hits twice. The first came against NC Central in a 22-14 win, while the second came in a 7-6 loss to Presbyterian.
  • Over the past seven games, Longwood is hitting .328 (78-238), and the team has tallied at least 10 hits in six of those games.
  • In the 20 games that Longwood has had at least 10 hits this season, the team has gone 14-6.

  • Seven players have hit their first Division I collegiate homers this year for Longwood, with Hayden Harris, James Nelson, Ricky Jimenez, Dillon Champagne, Keondre Shelton and Aiden Tierney all hitting home runs.
  • As a team, Longwood is third in the Big South in strikeouts (342) and strikeouts per nine innings (8.39) while ranking second in strikeouts looking (96) to continue a trend under head coach Ryan Mau. The Lancers have ranked in the top three of the Big South in strikeouts four times in the previous six seasons
  • The Lancer pitching staff has surrendered the fewest homers in the Big South this season, limiting opponents to only 14 home runs in 43 games.
  • The staff has not allowed more than two homers in a game, and they have only allowed home runs in back-to-back games once this season.
  • Hayden Harris has excelled in the lineup for Longwood, hitting .290 in conference games while posting a .287 average overall. He is tied for the team lead with 28 runs scored.
  • Over his past seven games, he has had multi-hit games five times while hitting .400 (12-30) in that stretch, encompassing three games against Radford and three at UNC Asheville.
  • Ricky Jimenez has come on as the year has gone along, with the junior shortstop hitting a team-best .326 in conference games and .294 on the season. He has seven doubles and four homers in conference.
  • Over his past 15 games, Jimenez is hitting .431 (22-51), dating back to April 16 against Presbyterian. He has seven multi-hit games in that stretch.
  • Against UNC Asheville on May 7-8, Jimenez batted .538 (7-13) while posting a pair of three-hit games.
  • Freshman James Nelson has provided a big spark in the lineup as the season turned to April, with the big left-handed freshman hitting .354 this season while driving in 14 runs in 48 at bats.
  • Over three games against UNC Asheville, Nelson drove in five runs while going 3-9 at the plate. In the finale, he tallied three RBI, one shy of his career high, and all three RBI came with two outs.
  • Jack Schnell has been one of Longwood's most consistent hitters at the top of Longwood's lineup. The left-handed hitting outfielder holds a team-best .326 batting average.
  • Schnell has been hot over the past eight games, batting .419 (13-31), going back to the series finale at USC Upstate on April 25 as well as a three-game series against Radford on April 30-May 1 and a three-game series against UNC Asheville May 7-8.
  • In that eight-game stretch, he has also drawn eight walks and holds a .538 on-base percentage.
Scouting Winthrop
  • Longwood and Winthrop meet for their second three-game series of 2021. Winthrop took two of three against Longwood in Farmville in a close series March 20-21. The Eagles won the opener 6-5 before Longwood won the middle game 7-3. Winthrop closed out the series with a 14-6 win in the finale.
  • Winthrop comes in off a 12-3 loss to Campbell, the second-best team in teh Big South this season. The Eagles swept their last conference series behind an explosive offense. Winthrop swept Charleston Southern on the road, winning the first game of the series 4-2 before sweeping a doubleheader 17-4 and 9-7. On May 5, the team lost a midweek non-conference matchup to Wofforod 4-3.
  • The last time Winthrop played at home, they lost two of three to High Point in three high-scoring matchups. The Panthers took the opener 11-2 before Winthrop won 11-10 in 10 innings in the middle game of the series. High Point took the finale 19-15 in a wild series finale.
  • This season, Winthrop's offense ranks third in the Big South with a .279 batting average and a .373 on-base percentage. Ty Hook leads the way with a .350 batting average, good for the sixth-best average in the Big South. He has hit in 24 runs, second on the team, while also hitting a homer and four doubles.
  • Nine players have a hit a home run for Winthrop, with Dillon Morton posting a team-best four this season. He is hitting .273. Spencer Yankle has hit three and leads the way with 29 RBI and 13 doubles while batting .273.  Joey Tepper has added three homers while hitting .319 with three doubles and 21 RBI, and Andrew Jenner is hitting .307 with nine doubles and 27 runs scored. Scout McFalls leads the team with 29 runs scored while hitting .303 with three homers.
  • The pitching staff ranks last in the Big South in ERA (7.06). Tyler Jones (1-5, 5.19 ERA) leads the team in starts while striking out 37 in 43.1 innings. Daniel Blair (2-4, 7.75 ERA) and Andrew Coker (0-1, 8.06 ERA) are the two other pitchers who have made at least five starts, with Blair starting six times against six relief appearances that have spanned 38.1 innings. Coker has made five starts in nine appearances across 22.1 innings.
  • Out of the bullpen, Dalton Mims (3-1, 5.34 ERA, 1 SV) leads the team with 22 appearances, all in relief, that have added up to 30.1 innings of work. He has struck out 27. Colten Rendon (3-2, 5.33 ERA, 3 SV) leads the team in saves while making 13 appearances, 11 in relief, over 25.1 innings. He has struck out 18 to only six walks. Jason Crumley (0-3, 5.19 ERA) has added 13 appearances, two starts, in 26.0 innings.
