FARMVILLE, Va. – High Point's offense got hot and never stopped on Friday afternoon against Longwood baseball. The Panthers scored at least one run in each of the first eight innings to take down the Lancers 12-2.
High Point (10-15, 8-10 Big South) tallied 15 hits as four players had multi-hit games. Nine of the team's first 10 hits were either doubles or home runs.
Ryan Russell had a monster day, punching out a pair of homers and a double as part of a 3-5 outing with three RBI. Adam Stuart matched him with a 3-5 day of his own with two doubles and three RBI, and Peyton Carr added two doubles and scored twice while going 3-6 at the plate.
Meanwhile, High Point ace Grey Lyttle (4-3) made life difficult for Longwood (9-17, 2-10 Big South) to return the favor. The right-hander came into the day as one of the top pitchers in the Big South holding batters to a .211 average against him with a 2.31 ERA. He limited Longwood's offense to six hits through his eight innings of work. He struck out five against one walk while giving up two runs to earn the win.
For Longwood,
Keondre Shelton cranked his first collegiate home run with a solo shot to left field in the eighth.
Eliot Dix added his team-leading 22
nd RBI with a single up the middle in the fourth inning, but Lyttle kept Longwood from breaking out with the big base hits.
Instead, it was High Point that found gaps with timely swings early, as Cole Singsank, Carr and Stuart all drove in runs with doubles while Russell swatted his first home run for a 6-0 lead through three innings.
Longwood had an opportunity to respond in the fourth with runners on first and second, but a lineout turned into a double play to end the threat.
"We have to get a better start on the mound," said Longwood head coach
Ryan Mau. "We have to get settled into the game better than we have. I would like to see our team be more resilient when adversity does arise. I would like to see more fight when things don't quite go as planned."
Andrew Melnyk (0-2) took the loss for Longwood after giving up six runs, all earned, on seven hits and a walk in three innings of work. He struck out one in his eighth start of the season for the Lancers.
The two sides play in a doubleheader to wrap up the three-game series tomorrow. Due to thunderstorms in the forecast, the first game of the doubleheader will start at noon. Longwood sends left-hander
Lloyd Dominguez to the mound to take on right-hander CJ Neese for High Point.
