The Opening Tip
•   Opening their ninth postseason as a member of the Big South Conference, Longwood enters the 2021 Big South Championship as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 seed UNC Asheville in Monday's quarterfinal round in Asheville, N.C.
•   The No. 5 seed is the second-highest the Lancers have been seeded in the Big South Championship, trailing only the No. 4 seed they earned in 2019-20.Â
•   Longwood earned its No. 5 spot in the bracket on the strength of a record-breaking regular season in which they won 10 Big South games, including eight of their past 10.Â
•   Point guard
Juan Munoz was named to the All-Big South second team,
Justin Hill was named Big South All-Freshman and
DeShaun Wade was picked as an Academic All-Big South honoree. Those awards are career firsts for all three.
Last Time Out
•   Hampton snapped Longwood's five-game winning streak and dealt the Lancers only their second loss since Jan. 19 with a 74-68 win in the regular-season finale Wednesday in Willett Hall.
•   The Pirates rode 20 points from Big South scoring leader Davion Warren to the six-point win, which also ended a six-game home-court winning streak for the Lancers.
•   Longwood cut Hampton's lead to three points, 69-66, in the final minute following a three-point play from
DeShaun Wade. However, after Warren fouled out on that same play, the rest of the Pirates lineup stepped up and stifled the end-game rally to preserve the Pirates victory.
•   Wade led Longwood with 15 points and was one of four double-digit scorers.
Juan Munoz added 13, while
Heru Bligen and
Zac Watson both contributed 10 points.
By The Numbers
•   The Lancers enters the 2021 Big South Championship tournament as one of the Big South's hottest teams, winning eight of their final 10 games en route to a 10-10 league finish. Only first-place Winthrop, at 9-1, had a better 10-game finish to the regular season.Â
•   For a second straight year and second time since joining the conference in 2012-13, Longwood earned a first-round bye. The Lancers have now reached the quarterfinals in six of their eight Big South Championships. Their lone trip to the semifinals came in 2015 when they upset No. 1 seed Charleston Southern in the quarterfinals.Â
•   Longwood is 6-0 this season when holding opponents under 60 points. Five of those wins have come since Jan. 19.
•  Â
Juan Munoz was named to the All-Big South second team, becoming the fourth Lancer in program history to earn Big South first or second honors.Â
•   The Lancers are 6-2 when they have a 20-point scorer this season. Munoz has a season-high three of those, while
DeShaun Wade and
Justin Hill have two 20-point games apiece, and
Leslie Nkereuwem has one.
•   Munoz is Longwood's active leading scorer in the Big South Championship, averaging 9.0 points per game in his prior two tournament games. He is the only Lancer on the roster to have played in multiple Big South Championship tournaments.
•   The Lancer bench is outscoring opponents by an average of 8.6 points per game this season. Longwood's reserves are averaging 25.7 points per game, compared to 17.1 by the opposition.
•   Freshman
Jesper Granlund has started every game and is one of only three Big South freshmen to do so.
•   Longwood's first-ever Big South postseason win came against UNC Asheville in the first round of the 2013 Big South Championship.
Quotable
"This is a team that has really fought and battled to get where they are, to earn a bye, to earn the fifth seed. There's a lot to be proud of, especially when you think of where things have been for Longwood basketball. This is a record for these guys, but we also can't lose sight of what's gotten us there."
— Longwood head coach
Griff Aldrich following this regular-season finale against Hampton
