Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood opens up a five-game homestand by hosting North Carolina Central on Tuesday afternoon.
  • The Lancers have played NC Central 22 times and hold a 13-9 record against the Eagles.
  • Longwood comes in with a series win thanks to taking two of three against The Citadel. Eliot Dix powered the team's offense, driving in nine of the 22 runs Longwood scored across the three games.
  • The Lancers took game two 4-2 in 10 innings, the team's first win in extras since 2010.
  • Longwood put up the 22 runs on 28 hits, the most hits over their first three games since racking up 30 hits against Tennessee Tech in 2015.
  • Dix was named the Big South Freshman of the Week after going 6-11 at the plate with his first two collegiate home runs to go with nine RBI. He had both a hit and an RBI in each of the team's three games over the weekend.
  • Longwood will play a 50-game modified schedule this year that features 40 Big South contests and 10 non-conference games.
By The Numbers
  • Longwood racked up double digit hits in its season opener, posting 12 to score 12 runs after totaling at least 10 hits eight times in 2020. In 2019, the team didn't notch at least 10 hits until its 13th game.
  • On opening weekend, the Lancers piled up 28 hits over a three-game stretch, the most since the team opened the season with 30 hits in three games against Tennessee Tech in 2015.
  • The 22 runs scored marked the most over a three-game span in a decade. The Lancers last topped the mark in 2011 against Cleveland State when they scored 27.
  • Longwood's offense tied for third in the Big South with 150 hits in 2020 while ranking fourth in hits per game with 8.8. The team was also third in RBI with 77.
  • On opening weekend, three different players hit a triple. Hunter Gilliam clocked the second triple of his Lancer career, and Andrew Gorham and Drayven Kowalski each poked their first triples in a Lancer uniform.
  • Four players had a triple in 2020. Cullan Wadsworth tied for the conference lead with a team-best three triples in that season.
  • The Lancers were third in the Big South in 2020 with six triples and had two games with two triples.
  • Longwood won its first extra inning game since 2018 despite never leading until the 10th and final inning against The Citadel.
  • The Lancers won 4-2 behind a strong performance from the pitching staff. Andrew Melnyk gave the team six strong innings to tie a career mark, only giving up two runs, one earned, in the start.
  • Dylan Saale was masterful in relief, with the freshman getting credit for win after pitching three scoreless innings. He struck out the side in the ninth to punctuate his outing where he faced one more than the minimum.
  • Dillon Champagne threw a scoreless 10th to earn his second career save.
  • Jack Schnell drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the 10th that broke a 2-2 tie, and Hunter Gilliam added an insurance run with an RBI base knock one batter later.
