FARMVILLE, Va. – Another win, another milestone for Longwood women's basketball.
Â
Behind the Big South-leading 11th double-double from Akila Smith and a three-point barrage led by senior Allysah 'Cookie' Boothe, the Lancers (11-8, 10-4 Big South) toppled Charleston Southern 76-51 to reach 10 Big South wins for the first time in program history.
Â
Just one day after routing the Buccaneers (6-14, 4-12 Big South) by 46 points in the series opener, the red-hot Lancers won for the eighth time in their past 10 games with another runaway effort against Charleston Southern.
Â
"I'm so excited for our women, most of all our seniors," said Longwood head coach Rebecca Tillett. "All four of them have made decisions at different times to make this program elevate, and we saw it play out in the game on their senior night. Of course we wish they could have everyone here, but I thought Cookie [Boothe] had an individual, really special performance and that was really neat for her.
Â
Boothe, on her senior night, sparked the offense with four of the team's 11 three-pointers and 14 points, while Kyla McMakin matched her with 14 points of her own. Akila Smith finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Tra'Dayja Smith flirted with a triple-double, contributing 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Â
"My teammates from the jump had confidence in all the seniors today and wanted to help them contribute today," said Boothe. "It was really special."
Â
The 14 points from Boothe matched a career high, as all four Lancer seniors logged at least 12 minutes. Mallory Odell tallied four points, three rebounds, and two assists, while Andrijana Reljic scored two points, grabbed three rebounds and added a block and a steal.
Â
The 25-point win is Longwood's fourth double-digit conference victory this season and has the Lancers securely within the Big South's top three alongside High Point (14-2) and Campbell (8-3). The Lancers' highest finish since joining the Big South was seventh place in their inaugural season in the league, 2012-13.
Â
The Lancers conference dominance includes a 9-1 mark at home, as they have been nearly unbeatable inside Willett Hall. The latest two wins have come on the strength of defense as well as offense, as they allowed just 99 points across two games to the Buccaneers.
Â
"You want to want to feel good here, you want to make memories here," added Tillett. "It's where they put in all the hard work in practice, it's where they have made so many shots.
Â
"We have been talking about our defense for so long, and it just keeps getting better, and it's so critical to get better as we approach the post season.
Â
Longwood's next regular-season series will be on the road at Gardner-Webb, with date and time to be determined.
