Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood closes out its first extended road stretch of 2020 with three neutral site games against Sacred Heart, Purdue Fort Wayne and Ball State.
  • The Lancers played Purdue Fort Wayne on opening weekend, February 14-16.
  • As a team, Longwood is averaging nearly nine hits and a little more than five runs per game. The offense has had double digit hits seven times in 13 games.
  • Longwood has already put up 29 extra-base hits through 13 games after amassing 22 a season ago.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. Thirteen games deep into 2020, Longwood is fourth in the Big South with 117 strikeouts. In 2019, the Lancers were fourth with 411 and third with 468 K's in 2018.In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts, breaking the school's D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.

  • Longwood has racked up double digit hits five times in its last seven games and seven times total in 2020. In 2019, the team didn't notch at least 10 hits until its 13th game.  The Lancers have put up 15 hits twice and scored more than 10 runs twice. 
  • Longwood's offense has been one of the top offenses in the Big South early in 2020. The team's .263 team batting average is fourth in the Big South, and the 66 runs scored rank third. The team is second in total hits with 114. Likewise, the Lancers are third in RBI with 62.
  • Longwood already has 29 extra-base hits through 13 games after only recording 22 in 13 games in 2019.
  • Four players have a triple in 2020, with Cullan Wadsworth hitting a team-best two triples. 
  • The Lancers are second in the Big South with five triples and have had two games with two triples this season.
  • Wadsworth and Antwaun Tucker each hit triples on opening day, and Wadsworth and Hunter Gilliam knocked out triples against Binghamton on February 28.
  • Prior to 2020, Longwood hadn't had two triples in a game since April 14, 2018 against UNC Asheville.
  • Tucker has 13 career triples and is now tied for fourth all time with Rhett Pfitzner '97. Scott Hueston '97 is the all-time triples leader with 20.
  • Andrew Gorham had a monster opening weekend in his first series as a Lancer with six hits. On the season, he holds a .300 batting average and a .396 on-base percentage.
  • Ricky Jimenez keyed the team's 11-8 win over Purdue Fort Wayne with Longwood's first 4-hit day of 2020. 
  • Aidan McEvoy has been a reliable arm out of the bullpen as a freshman, with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings across six relief appearances. The lefty holds a 1.35 ERA.
  • Cullan Wadsworth has a knack for finding home plate when he reaches base and has done so in 25% of his plate appearances.  His 13 runs scored rank second in the Big South.
  • In addition, Wadsworth has batted in eight runs, good for second on the team. 
  • Sophomore Hunter Gilliam leads the Lancers in hits and is tied for fifth in the Big South with 16 hits while tying for third in doubles with four.
  • The right-handed slugger hit .526 (10-19) over a five-game stretch from Feb. 25 to March 3 while posting a .736 slugging percentage and picking up three multi-hit games during that time frame.
  • During that four-game stretch, Gilliam posted a team-best 5 RBI while also hitting a pair of doubles and a triple.
  • Gilliam has hit safely in seven straight (.464, 13-28) dating back to February 22 against NJIT.
Last Time Out
  • Tennessee came in as the fourth-highest scoring offense in the nation, and the 11th ranked Volunteers flexed their muscle early on to run away with it 28-2. For Longwood, Jack Schnell hit his first homer of 2020, and Nate Blakeney hit an RBI single in the second inning.
Scouting Sacred Heart, Purdue Fort Wayne and Ball State
  • Longwood will play both Sacred Heart and Ball State for the first time in team history. The Lancers already played Purdue Fort Wayne in a four-game series to open 2020.
  • Against Purdue Fort Wayne, Longwood won the series finale 11-8 and put up 15 hits in both the opener and finale. On opening day, Longwood's rally came up just short in a 10-8 loss.
  • For Sacred Heart's offense, Justin Jordan leads the team with a .389 batting average, 14 hits and seven runs scored. He is one of four players to hit a home run, along with Jake Frasca, Sam Mongelli and Bobby Garbuio. Mongelli leads the team with three doubles, and Frasca has a team-best 7 RBI.
  • Sacred Heart's pitching staff is led by junior Ryan LaMay. The right-hander is 1-0 across his two starts this season with a 2.38 ERA in 11.1 innings of work. He has struck out six to three walks and five hits while giving up three runs. David Aufiero and Michael Attonito each have made a team-high four appearances out of the bullpen, with Aufiero posting a 0.00 ERA in 7.2 innings and Attonito posting a 3.60 ERA in 5.0 innings.
  • For Purdue Fort Wayne's offense, Dylan Stewart leads the team with a .370 batting average to go with 6 RBI, while Garrett Mohler has a team-best 16 hits with a .364 average. Garrett Lake leads the way with 7 RBI, and Aaron Chapman has scored a team-best 11 runs.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne's Cameron Boyd holds a 5.82 ERA across three appearances, all starts, this season. The right-hander is 1-2 after surrendering 11 runs, all earned, on 23 hits in 17 innings while striking out 15 and only walking three. 
  • For Ball State, Trenton Quartermaine leads the way with a .417 batting average, eight RBI and six runs scored to go with 10 hits and one double. Justin Conant has a team-best 12 hits, and Aaron Simpson has a team-best seven extra-base hits (3 doubles, 3 triples, one homer). Adam Christianson and Ross Messina have also hit home runs.
  • Ball State's pitching staff has had John Baker and Kyle Nicolas lead the way with three starts apiece. The duo have each struck out 20 batters, with Baker posting a 2.35 ERA in 15.1 innings and Nicolas posting a 3.94 ERA across 16.0 innings. Zach Losey has been lights-out out of the bullpen with a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings over three appearances. He has struck out seven to two walks.
