WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Colonial Athletic Association powerhouse William & Mary continued its undefeated start to the 2020 spring at Longwood's expense Saturday afternoon, dispatching the visiting Lancers 7-0 at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
The Tribe (3-0), who entered the 2019-20 season after reaching the CAA Championship bout in three of the past five seasons, swept every line to shut out the Lancers (2-2) for the first time this season.
"There's not a lot to say; those guys were just better than us in every single line," said Longwood head coach
Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez. "I think we played well, but when you have a better player on every single shot and every single ball, even when you're trying to do things well, sometimes the other guys are just much, much better."
William & Mary opened the day with a doubles-point sweep and followed by taking all six singles bouts in straight sets. Tribe No. 3 Brenden Volk began that rally with a 6-1, 6-1 takedown of Longwood freshman
Ignacio Sandoval, and No. 6 Chen Ruo and No. 2 Finbar Talcott followed with wins of 6-2, 6-3 over Lancer freshman
Ernest Rocabert and 6-3, 6-3 over junior
Guilherme Sergio, respectively. Talcott's win over Sergio clinched the team win, and the Tribe cruised the rest of the way.
"A match like this is good to show us what we need to work on to play at the next level, but I have nothing negative to say about our guys' attitude and willingness to compete today," Medina Alvarez said. "Sometimes you just have to clap and say congratulations to the other team and just go home."
Longwood ace
Amadeo Blasco, who one day prior broke the program's all-time singles wins record, gave William & Mary frontrunner Joseph Brailovsky a two-set battle before falling, 6-4, 6-4.
The Lancers will have nearly a week to regroup from Sunday's loss with six days remaining before they take the court again with a trip to Elon on Saturday, Feb. 15. That match precedes the Lancer men's home opener at the Lancer Courts, which will bring the Howard Bison to Farmville on Sunday, Feb. 16.
