Singles Dominance Leads Lancers Past Christopher-Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – An impressive singles performance up and down Longwood's lineup powered the women's tennis team past Christopher-Newport 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the James River Country Club.

Christopher-Newport took the doubles points to take a 1-0 lead, but the Lancers roared back with five singles wins on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Longwood improved to 3-0 for a second straight season.
Yulia Almiron and
Maria Saez led Longwood with a pair of singles wins in addition to their doubles win, and
Marija Venta,
Emma Nurgazieva and
Crystal Nzewi added solo triumphs of their own.

It was youth that led the way to the comeback with the freshman Saez and sophomore Nurgazieva dominating their singles matches to spark five straight singles wins. Saez stayed unbeaten on the season and cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Reagan Delp in the third position. Nurgazieva blasted past Olivia Reed 6-1, 6-2 in number two slot and also improved to 3-0 in singles play this year.

It took a tiebreaker for
Marija Venta, but the senior rallied past Amanda Yermal 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 to pick up her second win of 2020. Junior
Yulia Almiron played from the first spot for a second straight match and clinched it for Longwood. She took down Johanna Ranta-ho in a straight-set battle, 6-4, 7-6. Almiron also stayed undefeated on the young season with her win.
Crystal Nzewi closed out Longwood's singles wins with a 6-3, 6-1 takedown in the number six slot to give Longwood a cushion.

In doubles Christopher-Newport's number one doubles combo of Ranta-ho and Reed took their match before Almiron and Saez evened the doubles score. Christopher-Newport earned the doubles point with a win in the number three spot from Delp and Kara Ferner.

The win marks Longwood's second in as many seasons over Christopher-Newport.

Longwood is off for a week before traveling to Elon on Saturday, February 15 for their fourth straight road match to start the season.
