Longwood Women's Tennis Drops Big South Opener to Campbell

Women's Tennis /
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Led by Big South All-Conference team members Ana Castillo and Lou Regen, Campbell's women's team bested Longwood 7-0 in the Lancers' 2020 conference opener on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Camels improved to 2-0 to start Big South conference play for the second straight season. Campbell went 6-3 in conference duals in 2019, advancing to the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Winthrop. Overall, the Camels (7-2, 2-0 Big South) have recorded winning-conference records six of the past seven seasons.

The loss serves as just the second this season for Longwood (4-2, 0-1 Big South), and their first in conference play. Despite the setback on Wednesday, the Lancers still hold a strong singles record of 21-15 in the spring, including 4-2 in each of the top four positions.

The Camels got out to an early lead, taking each of the first two doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. Castillo and teammate Lea Cutera took down Longwood's top pair of Yulia Almiron and Maria Saez in the first slot, 6-1. Marija Venta and Jamie Breunig, the Lancers's second doubles team, dropped a 6-3 decision in the No. 2 slot, clinching the doubles point for the Camels.

In singles play, Regen and senior Lea Cutura remained unbeaten with solo victories for Campbell—the Camels needed just two sets in five of their six singles victories, slowing down a Longwood team that entered the match with a 21-9 mark in singles play. Senior Jamie Breunig took the Camels' Alexandra Nicoara to the brink, winning the first set before falling 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 in her first loss of the spring season.

Longwood will return to Farmville this weekend to open their 2020 home slate on Sunday, March 1 against Mount St. Mary's. Longwood tennis' double header with Norfolk State, originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29, has been postponed until March 23.
