Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood heads out for its second road test of the season with a trip to Liberty
  • The Lancers and Liberty haven't played since the Flames left the Big South after the 2018 season. Liberty won two of three against Longwood in 2018.
  • Longwood has piled up at least 10 hits in four games this season and has scored more than 10 runs twice. The Lancers are fourth in the Big South in batting average.
  • Jack Schnell has a team-best 7 RBI, with 11 players having driven in a run.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancer pitching staff has consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2020, Longwood is second in the Big South with 80 strikeouts and leads the conference with 33 strikeouts looking. In 2019, the Lancers were fourth with 411 and third with 468 K's in 2018.In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts and broke the school's D-I record of 440 while ranking third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016  third in 2015.

By The Numbers
  • Longwood hits the road for its second road test of the season with a trip to in-state rival Liberty. The Lancers play at home for three straight weekends and on the road for three straight midweek games to open 2020.
  • Longwood has racked up double digit hits four times through eight games in 2020 after not recording 10 hits until their 13th game in 2019. The Lancers have put up 15 hits twice and scored more than 10 runs twice. 
  • Longwood freshman Justin Looney pounded his first collegiate homer in crunch time against NJIT on Saturday, February 22. He hit a grand slam on a 2-0 pitch to end the game in the bottom of the ninth. 
  • Jack Schnell picked up where he left off in 2019 after closing his sophomore season on a tear. The junior is tied for the team lead with nine hits while posting a team-best seven RBI. His 7 RBI are good tied for fifth in the Big South. 
  • The left-hander holds a .321 batting average to go with two doubles, and he is tied for the team lead with five walks.
  • Longwood second in the Big South with 80 total strikeouts while ranking third in strikeouts per nine innings with 10.75.
  • The Lancers struck out a season-high 17 batters on February 21 against NJIT.
  • Freshman right-hander Dominick D'Ercole leads Longwood with 10 strikeouts in six innings of work. John Gregory has struck out nine, and Nick Fuchs has fanned eight.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2019, the Lancers were fourth with 411 K's. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the school's D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings.   • Andrew Gorham has had a strong start through eight games as a Lancer. The junior college transfer has started all eight games and is third on the team with eight hits and four RBI. He has also tied for the team lead by drawing five walks and has posted a .467 on-base percentage. 
  • Dillon Champagne holds a .300 average across 20 plate appearances and also picked up a relief win in Longwood's 11-7 walkoff against NJIT. He pitched the final two outs of the ninth.
  • Ricky Jimenez keyed the team's 11-8 win over Purdue Fort Wayne with Longwood's first 4-hit day of 2020. He went 4-5, 2 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI.
Last Time Out
  • Longwood put up 11 hits against NJIT, but the Highlanders took the series by outslugging Longwood as the two teams combined for 30 hits.
  • NJIT used big first and sixth innings to pull away in a 17-5 win.
Scouting Liberty
  • Liberty and Longwood play for the first time since a three-game series in 2018, when Liberty was still part of the Big South. Liberty took the series after taking the rubber match 5-4 in 11 innings in Lynchburg. The two teams had split the first two games of the series, with Liberty winning game one 9-6 before Longwood took game two 8-6.
  • The Flames come in having won two straight tight games to take a three-game series against Seton Hall. Seton Hall won game one 5-4, but Liberty won games two and three 3-2 and 5-3. Shortstop Cam Locklear keyed the 5-3 win with a grand slam. The Flames opened the season at Clemson before beating Radford for their home opener.
  • Liberty won the 2019 Atlantic Sun title and were the preseason pick to win the ASUN in 2020. Four players, second baseman Will Wagner, outfielder Gray Betts and pitchers Noah Skirrow and Garrett Price, were ASUN Preseason All-Conference selections.
  • At the plate for Liberty, senior Trey McDyre leads the team with a .438 batting average. Ben Highfill and Locklear each have a team-best 5 RBI.
  • Liberty has hit four home runs this season, one apiece for Highfill, Locklear, Brady Gulakowski and Brandon Rohrer.
  • On the mound, projected starter Mason Hand has made a pair of appearances with one start in 2020. He started and recorded the win against Radford after two-hitting the Highlanders for five innings. The right-hander struck out three and walked two without surrendering a run. His relief appearance came against Clemson in the team's second game of the season, and he tossed one scoreless frame.
  • Garret Price has made a team-leading five appearances out of the bullpen and has struck out nine in seven innings while walking 10 and posting a 2.57 ERA. Opposing batters are only hitting .143 against him in 21 at bats.
