Lancer Leadoff

  • Longwood will wrap up the 2019 regular season this Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, with a three-game Big South finale at Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.
  • The games will be Longwood's first on the road since April 23. The Lancers are coming off a nine-game homestand that included three consecutive weekend home series.
  • Longwood is just four punchouts shy of striking out at least 400 batters for the fifth straight season. Longwood has hit that mark every year under head coach Ryan Mau.
  • Longwood has knocked out 36 hits in its past three games, the team's most productive offensive stretch of the season. Seven of those knocks have gone for extra bases, including four home runs.
  • The Lancer pitching staff sits second in the Big South with 396 strikeouts while averaging 8.60 strikeouts per nine innings. Tyler Morgan (11.34) and Nick Fuchs (10.28) rank No. 1 and No. 4 in strikeouts per nine in the Big South.

By The Numbers

  • Longwood swatted 10 home runs in April and has added four more in May, giving the Lancers 30 this season after hitting just 23 in 2018.
  • Jacob Mitchell has hit a team-best nine of those bombs with two in last weekend's series against Presbyterian.
  • Freshman Hunter Gilliam has hit four, Antwaun Tucker has hit three, and De'Andre Pitts, Jawan McAllister, Jack Schnell, Cullan Wadsworth, and Nate Blakeney all have two.
  • Longwood sits among the Big South leaders in stolen base efficiency. The Lancers are successful 77.3 percent of the time after going 55-72 on stolen base attempts this season.
  • Jawan McAllister and Antwaun TUcker lead the Lancers and rank tied for ninth eighth in the Big South with 13 steals apiece. McAllister is 13-of-16, while Tucker is a perfect 13-of-13.
  • Longwood ranks third in the Big South with 82 doubles.
  • Nate Blakeney is tied for fourth in the Big South with 14 doubles.
  • Longwood is second in the Big South with 396 strikeouts and 8.61 strikeouts per nine innings.

Scouting Presbyterian

  • Longwood and Campbell meet for the first time since the Fighting Camels dealt Longwood an 8-1 loss in the first round of the 2018 Big South Baseball Championship.
  • Campbell enters the weekend series as the No. 2 team in the Big South standings, trailing frontrunner Radford by one game.
  • The Fighting Camels boast the league's top pitching staffs, leading the Big South in ERA (4.10), opponent batting average (.245) and strikeouts per nine innings (8.86) on the mound.
  • The Campbell pitching staff is led by the top 1-2 punch in the Big South with Ryan Chasse leading the conference with a 2.84 ERA and Michael Horrell coming in just behind him with a 2.99 clip that ranks third. Those two also rank among the Big South's top five in opponent batting average and wins.
  • Campbell also owns a high-powered offense that leads the Big South in on base percentage (.376) and ranks among the top three in runs (308), doubles (2), triples (11) and walks (216).
  • Matthew Barefoot is one of the Big South's top power threats with a team-leading 10 home runs and 39 RBI, while Luis Giminez has also made an impact at the plate with 15 doubles to tie for second place in that category in the Big South.
