Longwood Men Bookend Final Home Match With 7-0 Sweep

Lancers Make Quick Work of Hampton in Likely Last-Ever Match on Lancer Courts

FARMVILLE, Va. – Wednesday morning, Longwood University announced a $15 million gift from Joan Brock '64 that will initiate the construction of a new convocation center and basketball arena. The announcement also revealed that to make room for the Joan Perry Brock Center, Longwood tennis will be the beneficiary of a new venue on the south end of Longwood's campus.

So just a few hours after learning that Wednesday's home match against Hampton may be their last ever at Lancer Courts, the Lancers made it count.

In their final home match on the season and most likely their last at their long-time home next to Willett Hall, Longwood gave the Lancer Courts a proper sendoff with a 7-0 sweep of Hampton (1-15, 0-7 Big South).

The win was the second straight for the Lancers (12-7, 2-4 Big South), who dominated at every position and will head into the last weekend of conference play with two final matchups at USC Upstate and Gardner-Webb this Friday and Saturday.

Longwood's top duo of Amadeo Blasco and Guilherme Sergio began the onslaught with a No. 1 doubles victory over Davy Van Geerke and Luke Thompson, 6-1. That win secured the doubles point and a 1-0 lead after the Pirates surrendered court three by default.

From there, the Lancers made quick work of the Pirates at every spot, winning the top five positions in straight sets and the sixth court by default to post their second straight shutout and sixth of the season.

Blasco defeated Davy Van Geerke 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 followed by Sergio, who won over Thompson 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Rosen Naydenov, playing at No. 5, served Charles Hudson a a 6-2, 6-2 loss.

Guillermo Cagigas then cranked out another win against Basil Post for the Lancers 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 4 position, while Raisei Sakai finished off the Longwood men's final match on Lancer Courts 6-1, 6-2 against Fernando Fernandes at No. 3.

Now the Lancers will aim for a .500 finish in conference play with upcoming bouts against USC Upstate and Gardner-Webb on the road. Those back-to-back road contests this Friday and Saturday precede the 2019 Big South Championship tournament on April 17-20 in Radford, Va., where the Lancers will look to advance back to the semifinals for a second straight year.
