Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood opens up a four-game homestand with its fourth commonwealth opponent of 2019. Longwood and VCU meet for the 21st time in team history.
  • The Lancers put up a 19 runs in three games (a season high for any three-game stretch) over the weekend, but UNC Asheville outslugged the Lancers to sweep the series.
  • Longwood will face six in-state foes in 2019 with VMI and Radford still to come.
  • Antwaun Tucker and Hunter Gilliam combined to go 17-30 at the plate with nine RBI, eight runs scored and four extra-base hits between them.
  • Longwood's offense swatted two homers in three games at UNC Asheville after going four games without one, its longest stretch without one this year.
  • Fifth-year head coach Ryan Mau is three wins away from his 100th win as a head coach, all at Longwood.
By The Numbers
  • Longwood has hit 13 home runs in March and 16 for the season and are on pace for 32 this season after hitting 23 in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam leads the way with four homers, while Jacob Mitchell has hit three. De'Andre Pitts and Jawan McAllister each have two. Gilliam hit the team's first homer of the season on opening weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Mitchell had the team's first multi-homer game after knocking out two solo shots against Gardner-Webb on March 16 in the first game of a doubleheader.
  • Nine players have already hit a home run for Longwood after nine players knocked one out of the park in 2018.
  • Antwaun Tucker returned from injury with a vengeance on Friday, March 29 at UNC Asheville. After missing 13 of 15 games with two pinch-hit appearances, the junior set a career high by going 4-5 at the plate to open the series.
  • He tied that career mark again in game three by going 4-5 for the second time in three games.
  • In the series, Tucker went 8-12 with five runs scored, three RBI, two doubles and his first triple of 2019. He added four stolen bases and is a perfect 8-8 on steals in 2019.
  • Hunter Gilliam has been a revelation in the Longwood order and holds a .330 batting average. The freshman has started all 27 games for the Lancers and leads the team with 33 hits, four homers and 15 RBI to go with 16 runs scored (second on the team). He also has amassed 11 multi-hit games and had his first three-hit game on Saturday, March 23.
  • Freshman outfielder Cullan Wadsworth has started 22 games for the Lancers and smashed his first triple of his Lancer career against Winthrop on March 23.
  • Freshman pitcher Andrew Melnyk has drawn a series opening start in five straight. In the team's Big South home opener, he struck out a career best seven in a career high six innings on March 29 against Winthrop.
  • Longwood leads the Big South with 8.92 strikeouts per nine innings and is third with 221 total strikeouts.
  • Starting pitcher Tyler Morgan has fanned a Big South best 48 batters while racking up 10.89 strikeouts per nine innings, good for third in the Big South. Nick Fuchs is eighth with 9.20 strikeouts per nine innings.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the previous school D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.
Last Time Out
  • Longwood jumped out to a 6-2 lead after Antwaun Tucker scored three times and drove in two runs at UNC Asheville, but the Bulldogs plated nine runs between the fifth and the sixth to take down Longwood 11-8. Nate Blakeney hit his first home run of the year for the Lancers.
Scouting VCU 
  • Longwood and VCU meet for the 21st time in team history and fifth straight season. Longwood last won in 2016 when the Lancers beat VCU 10-9. VCU won last year's contest 12-2.
  • VCU has won seven of its last eight after starting A-10 play 5-1. Over the weekend, VCU took two of three from Davidson, winning games two and three 7-3 and 13-1 after falling 3-2 in game one.
  • VCU's offense is hitting .299 as a team, and five every-game starters are hitting above .300. Liam Hibbits holds a team-best .289 batting average with 24 RBI and 14 runs scored. Zac Ching has a team-best four home runs and 11 doubles while driving in 28 runs to go with a .325 average. Paull Witt (24 RBI) is the third player with at least 20 RBI, and he holds a .348 batting average and has scored 21 runs.
  • Benjamin Dum has been the top reliever out of hte bullpen with a team-high 10 appearances. He hasn't allowed an earned run in five straight appearances, and he has pitched multiple innings in every appearance to post 37 strikeouts in 34 innings with a 2.38 ERA. Sam Ryan (29 strikeouts), and Jack Alkire (25 strikeouts) also have posted at least 20 strikeouts while combining for 17 appearances and 51.1 innings.
