  • Longwood wraps up four straight games on the road with a three-game series at Big South foe UNC Asheville. The two teams first met in 2013, Longwood's first year in the Big South
  • The Lancers took an early two-run lead at ACC power Virginia behind two RBI singles by Hunter Gilliam before Virginia took the lead with a big fourth inning.
  • Longwood heads home for four straight next week before embarking on nine straight road games, its longest road stretch of the season.
  • Freshman Hunter Gilliam leads the team with 27 hits and is tied for the team lead with three home runs while compiling a .314 batting average to go with 11 RBI.
  • Longwood's pitching staff is second in the Big South with 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings and 69 batters struck out looking.
  • Fifth-year head coach Ryan Mau is three wins away from his 100th win, and all have come at Longwood. 
By The Numbers
  • Longwood has hit 11 home runs in March and 14 for the season. The Lancers hit 23 in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam and Jacob Mitchell lead the team with three homers, and De'Andre Pitts and Jawan McAllister each have two. Gilliam hit the team's first homer of the season on opening weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Mitchell had the team's first multi-homer game after knocking out two solo shots against Gardner-Webb on March 16 in the first game of a doubleheader.
  • Eight players have already hit a home run for Longwood after nine players knocked one out of the park in 2018.
  • Longwood starter Tyler Morgan has been stellar in three straight starts. He took a tough loss against Winthrop on March 23 despite striking out nine against the Big South's top offense in six-plus innings. He only surrendered three runs, on earned, on two walks and six hits.
  • On March 16, Morgan dominated in a series-clinching win over Gardner-Webb. The junior threw a complete-game four-hitter while striking out a season high 10 for his second complete game in his Longwood career.
  • The week before, Morgan baffled Albany on March 9 with a then season-best nine strikeouts, seven of them looking. He was named the Big South Co-Starting Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his Longwood career after only surrendering five baserunners in seven innings.
  • Morgan leads the Big South with 43 strikeouts and 18 batters struck out looking.
  • Hunter Gilliam has been a revelation in the Longwood order and has been one of the top hitters on the team all season. He holds a .314 batting average while racking up a team-high 27 hits as one of only three players who has started every game. The freshman has a team-best nine multi-hit games. Gilliam is second with 13 runs scored and has 11 RBI, including the first two against Virginia that gave Longwood a 2-0 lead through three innings on March 26..
  • Freshman outfielder Cullan Wadsworth has started 21 games as a corner outfielder. With 11 runs scored, Wadsworth is one of three players that has scored at least 10 runs.
  • Freshman pitcher Andrew Melnyk has drawn a series opening start in five straight, including the team's conference opener against Gardner-Webb. He struck out a career-high seven in a career-best six innings against Winthrop on March 22.Longwood starter Tyler Morgan has been stellar in three straight starts.   • The Lancers are second in the Big South with 8.73 strikeouts per nine innings, a tenth of a strikeout per nine behind Campbell. The Lancers have struck out 193 in 24 games.
  • Starting pitcher Tyler Morgan is first in the Big South with 43 strikeouts and second with 11.06 strikeouts per nine innings.  Nick Fuchs sits in 10th with 8.88 strikeouts per nine.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the previous school D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.
 
Last Time Out 
  • Longwood took a 2-0 lead at Virginia thanks to a pair of RBI singles by Hunter Gilliam in the first and third innings, but Virginia rebounded by scoring six runs in the fourth inning. The Lancers responded with two runs in the fifth, but UVA kept attacking and piled up runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to put the game away and win 13-4.
 
Scouting UNC Asheville 
  • Longwood and UNC Asheville meet for the seventh straight season, having played in five of the previous six seasons since Longwood joined the Big South in 2013.
  • UNC Asheville has lost three straight after falling 7-6 in 10 innings to ETSU on Wednesday. Prior to that, the Bulldogs lost two straight to Campbell, 21-1 and 6-3, after taking the first game of the series 3-0.
  • The Bulldogs are second in the Big South with 17 home runs and have hit home runs in seven of their last nine games.
  • Brandon Lankford leads the team with eight homers while hitting .277 and starting all 23 games. Greg Gasparro has a team-best .362 batting average. Danny Wilson has a team-high 19 RBI to go with a .337 average.
  • On the mound, Jordan Carr leads the starters with a 5.40 ERA in a team-best 33.1 innings. Jacob Edwards has been one of the top relievers, with a 2.61 ERA and a 2-0 record in nine appearances, two starts, with 20.2 innings. Kole Harris has a team-high four saves in 12.2 innings while striking out 19.
