FARMVILLE, Va. – It may have started with a letdown against Big South power Campbell, but the Longwood women's tennis team made sure the weekend ended on a high note.
Powered by straight-set wins at all six singles spots, the Lancers (10-5) dominated Howard 7-0 to secure their second victory in as many days and reach double-digit wins for the first time since 2015-16.
Longwood dominated throughout the lineup, securing the doubles point for the second straight match and then rolling through singles play en route to their second 7-0 win of the season. That victory followed Saturday's milestone win over UNC Asheville that was the program's first over the Bulldogs since joining the Big South seven years ago.
But unlike Saturday's win that culminated with junior
Jamie Breunig's clincher at the No. 2 slot, Longwood's win over the Bison Sunday was a no-doubter.
Yulia Almiron and
Jamie Breunig locked up the first point of the day with a 7-5 doubles win at No. 2, and then the Lancer six rolled past the Bison at every singles slot.
Anika Tylek sparked that rally with a 6-0, 6-2 win, defeating Howard's Kendall Addison in the Lancer freshman's first try at the No. 3 position in the past 11 matches. Breunig followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4, picking up her second singles win of the weekend and her career-high 12th of the season.
With a 3-0 lead in hand, junior ace
Marija Venta then took her turn in the spotlight and polished off a 6-3, 6-2 win over Howard's Yassmine Khiri at No. 1 to clinch the win. That victory was Venta's second of the weekend following her 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 comeback win over Campbell No. 1 Lou Regen.
Emma Nurgazieva,
Yulia Almiron and
Crystal Nzewi then finished off the sweep with Nurgazieva topping Dominique Jackson 6-2, 6-3, Almiron defeating Nicole Hutchison 7-5, 6-4, and Nzewi knocking off Aria Ragas 6-3, 7-5. The win was the team-leading 13th of the season for Nurgazieva, whose freshman record improved to a team-best 13-1. Nzewi, meanwhile, won her second straight match while Almiron won for the third time in her past four matches.
The Lancers will now open their longest homestand of the season, playing four straight matches at the Lancer Courts against Charleston Southern (March 27), Maryland Eastern Shore (March 30), Hampton (April 5) and Presbyterian (April 6).
