Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood hosts Winthrop for its home opener in Big South play after taking a three-game series at Gardner-Webb.
  • The Lancers took the first two against Gardner-Webb before falling in game three.
  • On Tuesday, Monmouth piled up 17 hits and 17 runs despite Longwood's pitching staff striking out a season-high 17 batters.
  • The Lancers have played 12 of their first 20 games at home this season, but they head out for four straight on the road next week: at Virginia and at UNC Asheville.
  • Hunter Gilliam leads the team with 21 hits and is tied for the team lead with three home runs while compiling a .300 batting average.
  • Tyler Morgan posted his second complete game start as a Lancer with a nine-inning win at Gardner-Webb. He struck out a season-high 10 to clinch the series for the Lancers.
  • Longwood's pitching staff is first in the Big South with 8.9 strikeouts per game and 62 batters struck out looking. 
By The Numbers
  • Longwood has hit 11 home runs in March and 14 for the season, tied for second in the Big South. The Lancers hit 23 in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam and Jacob Mitchell lead the team with three homers, and De'Andre Pitts and Jawan McAllister each have two. Gilliam hit the team's first homer of the season on opening weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Mitchell had the team's first multi-homer game after knocking out two solo shots against Gardner-Webb on March 16 in the first game of a doubleheader.
  • Eight players have already hit a home run for Longwood after nine players knocked one out of the park in 2018.
  • Longwood struck out a season-high 17 batters on March 19 against Monmouth, and the Lancers lead the Big South with 8.89 strikeouts per nine innings, half a strikeout per nine ahead of Campbell. The Lancers have struck out 162 in 20 games.
  • Starting pitcher Tyler Morgan is tied for first in the Big South with 34 strikeouts and is first in the Big South with 10.55 strikeouts per nine innings. Nick Fuchs sits in second with 10.38 strikeouts per nine while sitting seventh with 25 K's on the season.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the previous school D-I record of 440. That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.
  • Senior reliever Jon Peterson was named the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week on March 18 after recording six straight outs for his first save of the 2019 season. He only needed 15 pitches to finish out Longwood's conference-opening win on March 16.
  • Tyler Morgan was named the Big South Co-Starting Pitcher of the Week on March 11 after a nine-strikeout, seven inning performance against Albany on March 9. He became the second pitcher to win the weekly award twice and first to do so in separate seasons. 
Last Time out
  • Longwood's pitching staff struck out a season-high 17 batters, but Monmouth racked up a season high 17 hits and 17 runs to take down the Lancers 17-3. Grant Keller hit his first homer of the season in the game for the Lancers and is the eighth player to hit a home run this year for Longwood.
Scouting Winthrop
  • Longwood and Winthrop meet for the first time in 2019 after playing in both the regular season and Big South playoffs in 2018. Winthrop won all four.
  • Winthrop comes in having won five straight. The Eagles are coming off an 8-1 win over The Citadel on Wednesday after sweeping Charleston Southern in a three-game series to start conference play at home, 9-1, 13-5 and 7-6.
  • Winthrop leads the Big South with a .277 team batting average and 36 doubles while posting 127 runs (second in the conference). Hunter Lipscomb (.350 average) and Spencer Yankle (.347 average) rank fifth and sixth in the Big South in batting average. Lipscomb leads the league with 22 RBI, and Matthew Mulkey is tied for sixth with 16 RBI.
  • On the mound, Nate Pawelczyk leads the Big South with a 0.84 ERA and four wins and is second with 32 innings pitched. He sits tied for fourth with 30 strikeouts while teammate Zach Peek is third with 33 K's.
