Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood takes on Monmouth for the first time in team history.
  • The Lancers won their conference-opening series for the fourth time since joining the Big South, but this was the first time Longwood took two of three on the road to start conference play.
  • Longwood opens up a four-game homestand this week after playing 11 of their first 16 in Farmville.
  • Freshman Hunter Gilliam leads Longwood at the plate with 20 hits while sporting a .303 batting average and being tied for first with three homers.
  • Longwood's offense sits fourth in the Big South with 13 home runs this season. Seven players have hit a homer.
  • The Lancer pitching staff is second in the Big South with 54 batters struck out looking. Tyler Morgan has a league-best 18 strikeouts looking.  
By The Numbers
  • Longwood has hit 10 home runs in March and 13 for the season, good for fourth in the Big South. The Lancers hit 23 in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam and Jacob Mitchell lead the team with three homers, and De'Andre Pitts and Jawan McAllister each have two. Gilliam hit the team's first homer of the season on opening weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Mitchell had the team's first multi-homer game after knocking out two solo shots against Gardner-Webb on March 16 in the first game of a doubleheader.
  • Hunter Gilliam has been a revelation in the Longwood order and holds a .303 batting average. The freshman has started all 19 games for the Lancers and leads the team with 20 hits while tying for the team lead with three homers to go with eight runs scored. He also has amassed six multi-hit games, best on the team while reaching base safely in four straight.
  • Freshman outfielder Cullan Wadsworth has started every game for the Lancers and has played both corner spots in the outfield. He is tied for third on the team with eight runs scored.
  • Carlos Garrido has a flair for the dramatic, including driving in the game-tying run against in the team's 9-7 win at Gardner-Webb on March 16.
  • The senior has driven in the game-winning runs three times for Longwood. On Saturday, March 9, he swatted his first career home run, a two-run bomb to right field, that capped a massive comeback in an 8-6 win over Albany.
  • Longwood reliever Jon Peterson picked up his first save of 2019 with a clean, 15-pitch, six out performance on March 16. He sealed Longwood's Big South opener by retiring Gardner-Webb to close the eighth and ninth.
  • Longwood is second in the Big South with 8.42 strikeouts per nine innings, half a strikeout per nine behind league-leading Campbell. The Lancers have struck out 145 in 16 games.
  • Starting pitcher Tyler Morgan is tied for first in the Big South with 34 strikeouts and is first in the Big South with 10.55 strikeouts per nine innings. Nick Fuchs lis second with 10.38 strikeouts per nine while sitting seventh with 25 K's on the season.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the previous school D-I record of 440. That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.  
Scouting Monmouth
  • Longwood and Monmouth meet for the first time in team history.
  • Monmouth took two of three from George Mason over the weekend in a high-scoring series. After falling 10-7 in game one, the Hawks won games two and three 9-3 and 7-3. Monmouth enters the series 5-11 overall and doesn't start conference play until March 30.
  • Monmouth took two from Maryland Eastern Shore at the Maryland Eastern Shore Tournament two weekends ago, 3-0 and 11-3.
  • JD Andreessen leads the Hawk offense with a .323 batting average and 21 hits and six doubles. Zach Schild has hit two of the team's four home runs and has a team-best 12 RBI. Kyle Norman is second on the team with a .270 batting average and has a team-best 14 runs scored.
  • Projected starter Kyle Ajjan has made three appearances and one start, posting a 2.70 ERA in 3.1 innings while striking out one and walking three against two hits and one run. Out of the bullpen, Jordan McCrum (1.29 ERA), Ryan Lillie (4.50 ERA) and Ryan Steckline (7.90 ERA) each have a save. McCrum and Nick Houghton have each struck out 12 out of the bullpen.  
Last Time Out
  • Longwood lost the series finale 9-5 at Gardner-Webb after a grand slam in the seventh inning put the game out of reach. The Lancers swept the first two games behind three home runs in game one and a dominant, complete game effort by Tyler Morgan in game two.
