FARMVILLE, Va. – Reigning Big South Player of the Week and Big South Preseason Player of the Year Emma Bockrath scored a game-high 15 points and added eight rebounds to lead visiting High Point past the Longwood women's basketball team 65-54 Tuesday night inside Willett Hall.
The red-hot Bockrath, the 2016-17 Big South Player of the Year, came into the week on the heels of a 32-point outing in the Panthers win over Hampton Saturday and averaging 23.5 in her last two games. She finished the night 6-of-15 from the floor while adding eight rebounds, five steals and two assists.
Bockrath's performance overshadowed the third double-double of the season for Longwood sophomore
Mallory Odell, who finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds. Odell was one of four Lancers (2-18, 1-9 Big South) to finish in double figures, as
Dayna Rouse scored 11 points on the heels of her Longwood Division I scoring record 34-point performance Saturday while
Kristina Antonenko added 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and
Kate Spradlin made 4-of-9 from three-point range to finish with 12 points.
"Our second-half run was something that we kept challenging them and they kept challenging each other to find our toughness, our fight," said first-year head coach
Rebecca Tillett "We turned the ball over 25 times and it's surprising that they [High Point] didn't have more shot opportunities but the differential still wasn't good for us."
Winners of their last five games to remain tied in the conference standings with Radford, High Point (15-6, 8-2 Big South) was paced by Bockrath's 15 points, while Camryn Brown finished with 12 on 6-of-8 shooting and Lindsey Edwards added 10 points, six rebounds.
High Point utilized a first quarter run that saw the Panthers jump out to an early 19-1 lead in the first 8:05 of the first quarter. The Panther defense held Longwood without a field goal for the first 8:33 before Antonenko converted a three-point play.
Despite High Point taking its largest lead of the game of 21 points with just over two minutes in the first half, Longwood put together a second-half rally that saw the Lancers cut the deficit to single digits with just over five minutes to play.
"In the second half, we were able to get some looks that we were looking for," Tillett said. "We made several adjustments that helped us with our spacing and we responded to their pressure. In the first half, they [High Point] did a great job of influencing us and speeding us up."
The game for Odell is her seventh of the season in double figures, as she finished 5-of-8 from the floor while adding two assists, a block and a steal in 25 minutes. It marks the third double-double of the season for Odell, as she improved upon her rebounding average that has her ranked among the top 10 in the Big South.
Rouse finishes in double figures for the 13th time on the season and for the third time in the last four games, as the conference's most efficient player finished 5-of-6 from the field while adding seven rebounds in a near double-double performance.
Antonenko, Longwood's leading scorer a season ago, finished in double figures for the first time on the season while Spradlin made a season-high four three-pointers to finish with her 12 points while adding two steals and an assist.
Up next, the Lancers face a rematch of Saturday's overtime win against Gardner-Webb, as Longwood travels to Boiling Springs, N.C. to face the Runnin' Bulldogs Saturday, Feb. 9 with the game set for a 3 p.m. opening tip.
"We turnaround and face Gardner-Webb on their floor where I'm sure they're very hungry, so I think it'll take great focus and preparation from our women to get ready for the rematch," Tillett said.
