Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood travels to Hawaii for its first road series of the season and first series against the Rainbow Warriors in team history. The Lancers played seven of their first eight at home. The team's sole road test was a midweek game at James Madison.
  • The Lancers opened the 2019 season with seven of their first eight in Farmville.
  • Thanks to weather, the Lancers played seven games in seven days to start the season. The Lancers had nine games affected by weather in 2018.
  • Antwuan Tucker sits eighth in the Big South with a .370 batting average and swatted his first homer of the season against George Mason.
  • Longwood has already played two Commonwealth of Virginia foes with a total of seven in-state opponents on the docket this season.
  • Longwood's pitching staff is second in the Big South with 10.03 strikeouts per nine innings and tied for second with 68 strikeouts total.

By the Numbers
  • Hunter Gilliam has come out swinging and holds a .333 batting average, second on the team. The freshman picked up his first hit in his first collegiate start on opening day, and he smashed a game-tying solo homer to left field on day two. He also has three multi-hit games and had a five-game hitting streak snapped in the second game against Army on Thursday, Feb. 21.
  • Freshman outfielder Cullan Wadsworth has started every game for the Lancers and is tied for second on the team with three RBI while reaching base safely in four straight. He picked up his first two collegiate hits and scored a run on opening weekend before plating Gilliam for his first collegiate RBI on the road at James Madison.
  • Freshman pitcher Andrew Melnyk has proven to be a versatile arm for the Lancers, coming out of the bullpen in his first appearance before getting his first collegiate start in a midweek game at James Madison. He struck out four in his first start without surrendering a run.
  • Longwood is second in the Big South (63rd nationally) with 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings, less than half a strikeout per nine behind league-leading Winthrop. The Lancers have struck out 68 batters through eight games.
  • Starting pitcher Nick Fuchs is tied for second in the Big South with 15 strikeouts and averages 10.95 strikeouts per nine innings (second in the Big South).
  • Juniors Tyler Morgan and Alec Abdalah are both tied for sixth in the Big South with 11 strikeouts.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the previous school D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.
  • Longwood picked up its first walk-off of the season thanks to an RBI single by Carlos Garrido on Feb. 16 to clinch a 4-3 win for Longwood over Maryland Eastern Shore.

Last Time Out
  • Longwood saw a three-run lead evaporate in a 4-3 loss on Tuesday against George Mason. The Lancers led 3-0 after one inning, but the Patriots plated three in the fifth and one in the sixth while limiting Longwood to two hits over the final eight innings.

Scouting Hawaii
  • Longwood and Hawaii have never played, although the Lancers did travel to Hawaii for a five game series with Hawaii Pacific back in 2005.
  • Hawaii plays its first 20 games at home. The Rainbow Warriors lost three of four to open the season against Portland before splitting a four-game series with Iowa over the weekend. Hawaii won the finale 8-7 in extra innings.
  • Alex Baeza leads Hawaii in nearly every offensive category, posting a team-best .435 batting average, 11 RBI, three home runs, eight runs scored and 10 hits. Dallas Duarte is hitting .346 with five runs scored while starting all eight games. Adam Fogel is second on the team with two homers to go with a .242 average.
  • Jeremy Wu-Yelland leads Hawaii's staff with 10.1 innings while compiling a 2.61 ERA in two starts to go with 12 strikeouts and six walks. Out of the bullpen, Cade Smith holds a 3.38 ERA in eight innings while striking out 12 in two appearances. Dylan Thomas is scheduled for his first start while posting a 1.50 ERA with 12 K's through six innings in two relief appearances.
