GREENSBORO, N.C. – Alexis Wayland may be a freshman on the Longwood roster, but as evidenced by her three-hit day with three total RBI Monday, she didn't play like a player who is less than one month into her Lancer playing career.
Wayland hit a home run in the first game of the day, as Longwood's six-game winning streak came to a close on a Delaney Cumbie walk-off blast to cap a 4-3 comeback win for the reigning Southern Conference champion Spartans. In game two, the Longwood third baseman brought home a pair of runs in support of a complete-game shutout from senior ace
Sydney Gay, as the Lancers took the nightcap 2-0 in the final game of the UNCG Invitational at UNCG Softball Stadium.
Gay's shutout victory moves her into a fourth-place tie with Jennifer Potts on Longwood's all-time career wins list with 64, as she earned her third win of the season in the effort. That effort highlighted a weekend that saw Longwood pitching allow six runs in four games and turn in a 1.59 ERA.
Leading the way offensively was Wayland, who finished Monday with a team-high three hits, adding a home run and a double to go with her three RBI.
Chelsea Whitcomb earned a pair of walks in game one and added two hits in game two, as the Virginia Tech graduate transfer finished the day 3-for-3 in stolen bases. Whitcomb has reached in six straight games.
Kaylynn 'Bug' Batten had a hit in both games while
Sydney Jacobsen collected her first career multi-hit game with a pair of singles to lead to runs in the second game.
On the heels of a pair of days that saw Longwood go 3-1, the Lancers will have three days to prepare for the Texas A&M Invite where head coach
Kathy Riley's team will square off against Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and national powerhouse Texas A&M.
Game 1: Spartans Walk-Off in 4-3 Comeback Win
After Longwood catcher
Kaylynn 'Bug' Batten produced the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the seventh inning, UNCG backstop Delaney Cumbie answered with walk-off two-run blast in the Spartans' come-from-behind 4-3 win.
That blast was preceded by a Jasmine Palmer hit-by-pitch two batters earlier, as Cumbie stepped to the plate with one out in the inning before hitting a 1-2 pitch to straight away center field. It marked the second time in the game that UNCG erased a Longwood lead and the first lead they had in the game.
With the loss, Longwood sees its six-game winning streak come to a close, while the Spartans won their sixth straight to remain unbeaten in their home tournament.
Sydney Gay (2-2) took the loss for the Lancers, coming on in relief and pitching one inning while the Cumbie home run was the only hit she gave up in facing five batters.
Coming off a complete-game, three-hitter Sunday against Northern Kentucky,
Sydney Backstrom earned the start in the circle, going 5.1 innings and giving up two runs on three hits and a pair of walks while striking out six batters in the no decision.
UNCG's Stephanie Bryden (6-3) went the distance in the circle in picking up the win for the Spartans, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out eight batters and throwing 108 pitches, 68 for strikes.
Six different Lancers combined for six hits, as
Jessica Smith picked up an RBI and came up with a double that produced the go-ahead run in the seventh before Cumbie's walk off.
Alexis Wayland also hit her second home run of the season and
Jenna Dunn extended her reached base streak to 10 straight games.
UNCG had four different players combine for four hits, as Cumbie and Marisa Sholtes each hit home runs to plate the only runs of the day for the Spartans.
Game 2: Wayland's Two RBI's Propel Lancers in Gay's Complete-Game Shutout
Sydney Gay tossed a complete-game shutout and
Alexis Wayland brought in both Longwood runs and the Lancers earned a 2-0 victory over the Spartans in a pitcher's duel in the second game of the day.
The win for Gay (3-2) moves her to a tie for fourth all-time on Longwood's career wins list, joining Jennifer Potts with 65 career victories. It marks the second complete-game shutout of the season for Gay, as the Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year worked around seven UNCG hits and a walk while striking out three Spartan batters.
Wayland brought in both Longwood runs with a 2-for-3 effort with a double and a pair of RBI, as she combined with
Sydney Jacobsen for four of Longwood's seven hits. It marked the first time in her career that Jacobsen finished with a multi-hit game. Â
Wayland's fifth inning, two out double into the gap in right center gave Longwood a 1-0 lead, bringing home Jacobsen after her first of two hits. The freshmen duo paired up again for an insurance run in the seventh, as Jacobsen led off the inning with a single before Wayland's single back up the middle brought home pinch runner
Mason Basdikis for an insurance run.
Kylie Bouplon (1-2) took the hard-luck loss for UNCG, going the distance and giving up two runs on seven hits. She added two strikeouts on 111 pitches, 68 for strikes.
