NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Taking the court on just 48 hours rest, Longwood men's tennis returned to action with a bang Saturday and shut out ITA Division III powerhouse No. 33 Christopher Newport in a 9-0 win at CNU Tennis Courts.
Longwood (3-2) won at all three doubles spot and six singles positions on Christopher Newport's home court to hand the nationally ranked Captains (1-1) their first loss of the spring.
That shutout started at doubles play as Longwood's No. 1 doubles team of
Amadeo Blasco and
Guilherme Sergio remained undefeated with an 8-2 win over Ryan Macy and Andy Mason, improving Longwood's top duo to 3-0.
Guillermo Cagigas and Marc Casanovas fished strong 8-6 at No.2 versus their rivals Nicholas Ruzicka and William Trang, while
Julian Farthing and
Raisei Sakai followed to finish doubles play with an 8-5 win over Bryce Coleman and Dominic Lacombe.
Headed into singles with a 3-0 lead, the Lancers made quick work of the Captains with straight-set wins at each of the top five slots and a three-set win at No. 6. That marked the second time this season the Lancers have swept the courts clean following a 7-0 victory over Chowan earlier this month.
Blasco, in pursuit of Longwood's career winning percentage record and dueling with senior teammate
Julian Farthing in pursuit of the program's all-time singles wins record, led that charge from the top with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mason at No. 1. That win was Blasco's 61st in his three-year career and improved his unbeaten record to 5-0 this spring
The Lancers hot streak continued as No.2 Sergio topped Lacombe 6-2, 7-5, No. 3 Cagigas beat Macy 6-4, 6-3 and No.4 Farthing defeated Ruzicka 6-2, 6-4. Sakai finished out the five straight-sets wins over Trang at No. 5 before sophomore
Rosen Naydenov defeated Mason Kolls in a his three-set comeback win at No. 6, 6-7, 6-3, 10-2.
"I think that we all kept the energy high from the first moment without letting the other team have a chance," said Naydenov, who is 2-1 since joining Longwood's top-six singles rotation three matches ago.
"It was a good win after two tough losses we had last week. Our main focus was to be consistent, keep the energy high and be all about the business we had to take care of. I think overall we were able to polish some details that impacted us at a high cost in last week's matches. We look forward to being more consistent and taking care of future matches."
The Lancers have had three matches in the past six days and have one more match Sunday to make it four in seven days. That gauntlet has been a test of the Lancers' fitness, a focal point for director of tennis
Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez in his second season as head coach of the men's program.
"The team played well, and they did what we came to do today," Medina Alvarez said. "It was a good way to get a win and save some energy so we can be ready to get another one tomorrow."
The Lancers will hit the road again tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 17, against Commonwealth rival and and Atlantic 10 foe George Mason at 4:45 p.m in Fairfax, Va.
