FARMVILLE, Va. – A four-run fifth inning and a pair of two RBI days from
Alexis Wayland and
Jenna Dunn led the Longwood softball team to a 6-2 win over Eastern Kentucky Sunday morning to conclude the Elon Tournament at Hunt Softball Park.
Two days after a convincing 10-1 win in its season debut over the Colonials, Longwood sent all nine batters to the plate and scored four runs to break open a 2-1 game.
Jenna Dunn's two RBI single, along with RBI singles from
Jordan Clark and
Alexis Wayland helped the Lancers (2-2) score four runs on four hits.
Five different Lancers finished with hits in the game, as Eastern Kentucky (1-3) starter Murphy McRoberts (0-2) took the loss in pitching 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. She was relieved by Bethany Todd, who gave up four runs on two hits while issuing two walks.
Sydney Backstrom (1-1) came on in relief to pick up the win. Backstrom fanning two batters while allowing one run on three hits. The win is the first of the season for Backstrom, who's coming off a 2018 season in which she was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team.
One day after recording her 500th career strikeout at Longwood, Gay was handed the ball to start and went 3.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits while adding a pair of strikeouts and walking three batters. The senior faced 15 batters, throwing 64 pitches, 38 for strikes.
Zoe Milhalicz led Eastern Kentucky at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, as the Colonials finished with seven hits.
Eastern Kentucky scored first in the opening inning with a Mihalicz two out single through the right side to plate Sammi Miller.
Longwood responded with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 in the third inning, as Batten's RBI sacrifice bunt and Wayland's RBI groundout.
After Longwood's four-run fifth inning, Eastern Kentucky scored a run in the seventh, as Mihalicz collected her second RBI on a fielder's choice.
After completing its season debut tournament, Longwood will welcome Delaware State, Norfolk State and Robert Morris to Lancer Field to take part in the Lancer Launch. That tournament is set to get underway Friday, Feb. 15, as Longwood hosts Norfolk State at 3 p.m.
