Lancers Show Fight, as Comeback Falls Short 66-60 Versus Campbell

Guihon, Bennett Finish in Double Figures for Lancers

FARMVILLE, Va. – After Campbell went on a third quarter run to take it's largest lead of the game at 16 points, Tuesday's game had a familiar feel for the Longwood women's basketball team after a pair of early second-half runs cost Longwood the game in a pair of losses at UNC Asheville and USC Upstate less than a week ago.

However, Longwood put together a fight of its own to erase that third quarter lead before Campbell once again responded late in the fourth quarter to escape Willett Hall with a 66-60 win in a game that featured six ties, seven lead changes.

"We've been challenging our team in that third quarter about showing some fight," said Longwood first-year head coach Rebecca Tillett. "We took a timeout after Campbell went on their run and our message at that point was that we needed a response, we can't allow teams to continue to take a big lead on us in the third quarter."

Campbell hit four consecutive three-pointers to increase a three-point halftime lead to 16 points, it's largest of the night, less than three minutes into the second half. From that point, Longwood rattled off a 20-7 run of its own to cut the deficit to three points headed to the final quarter.

After Ciarah Bennett scored seven of her 10 points in the game during Longwood's run to ultimately take a fourth quarter advantage, Campbell's Caroline Bowns hit back-to-back three's for six of her 12 points on the night to help the Camels snap their two-game losing skid.

"I'm pleased with our team's effort to fight back, going to the fourth quarter down three. We have to be mentally tough down the stretch," Tillett said. "Tonight, we turned it over a little too much in the last four minutes. Sometimes, you have to make a different read than what you want to do if it's taken away. I think we can get better at that."

Hayley Barber scored a game-high 17 points for Campbell, including 6-of-10 at the free throw stripe, while Shyanne Tuelle joined Bowns and Barber in double figures with 10 points, five assists, two blocks and two steals. With her 4-of-6 performance, Bowns led a three-point shooting display that saw the Camels connect on .471 (10-of-21) from long range.

For the Lancers (1-17, 0-8 Big South), Stephanie Guihon joined Bennett in double figures with 12 points, going 6-of-7 from the foul line while adding two assists in 32 minutes. Kristina Antonenko and Kate Spradlin each finished with eight points while Khaila Hall added six points, four assists, as all nine players for the Lancers to play found the scoring column.

Coming into Tuesday's game holding teams to 55.7 points per game – second fewest in the conference – Longwood connected on .368 of its shots to mark the third-highest shooting percentage against the Camels in Big South play.

Guihon, who averages 11.5 points this season inside Willett Hall, finished in double figures for the 10th time this season after doing so just four times in 2017-18 as a rookie. Meanwhile, the game for Bennett was the second time in a three-game span that she scored in double figures.

Up next, Longwood will continue play its second consecutive home game, as the Lancers welcome Gardner-Webb to Willett Hall Saturday, Feb. 2 with the opening tip set for 3 p.m.

"Losing is tough, but losing is really tough if you're not growing," Tillett said. "We're still growing, so we still have some connectedness in the locker room towards our growth. We remain hopeful that we can put that growth together and have a different outcome."
