Presbyterian Mounts Comeback Win to Take Series Opener

Blue Hose Reclaim Lead in the Sixth, Hold on to Down Longwood 5-3

CLINTON, S.C. -- In a series rife with Big South postseason implications, Presbyterian rode a game-changing two-run double from Andrew Bladt to a 5-3 win over Longwood in the opener Friday afternoon at PC Baseball Complex.

Bladt's go-ahead double came in the bottom of the sixth inning and erased a 3-2 Longwood lead that the Lancers (15-33, 7-15 Big South) built on the back of two early RBI and a third-inning home run from senior slugger Justin Mitchell. However, Bladt turned the tables from the nine-spot in the order, launching his go-ahead double to break up a four-inning scoreless drought and snap what was on track to be a quality start from Longwood starter Steven Farkas.

The win puts Longwood and Presbyterian into a tie for eighth place in the conference standings, leaving both teams in a dogfight for one of the final eight spots in the 2018 Big South Championship bracket. Both Longwood and Presbyterian trail UNC Asheville by a half game for the seventh spot, upping the stakes for the final two games of the weekend's series, which continues Saturday at 2 p.m.

Bladt's game-winning knock turned the tide against a Longwood team that had strung together four consecutive scoreless innings during an early-game surge that put them on top 3-2 behind a home run and two RBI from Mitchell. Lancer starter Steven Farkas (2-8) settled in after a two-run first to blank the Blue Hose through the fifth, but Bladt's sixth-inning double made him pay for a leadoff single from Priaulx and a one-out walk to Byrd.

Bladt's go-ahead double came with one out in the bottom of the sixth and scored both A.J. Priaulx and Tannor Byrd, setting the stage for Presbyterian's bullpen to close out the win with four scoreless innings the rest of the way. Chock (3-2) picked up the momentum from Bladt's double, retiring Longwood in order in the top of the seventh before yielding the ball to relievers Ryan Hedrick, Will Smith and Colton Springs. Those three combined for three no-hit innings to lock up the win.

Presbyterian first baseman Jack McLaughlin added a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to pad Presbyterian's lead.

Along with Mitchell's two RBI, Longwood infielder Nate Blakeney led the Lancer offense with three hits, his second three-hit performance in the past three games. Leadoff man Sammy Miller added two hits of his own, increasing his batting average to a team-leading .296 on the season.

Longwood and Presbyterian continue the series Saturday at 2 p.m. and follow with the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
