FARMVILLE, Va. – Playing his final singles match donning the Longwood blue and white at Lancer Courts, senior
Jorge Godoy delivered a clutch 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 three-set win as the Longwood men's tennis team downed Norfolk State 5-2 Sunday from the heart of campus.
Godoy, along with classmate
Lachlan Manser, made their final appearances on the Lancer blue hard courts Sunday as Godoy came out victorious in singles play while Manser took the court for doubles with freshman
Daniel Hernandez in his home finale.
After falling in the doubles point, Longwood (12-8), as they've done so many times this season, put their best foot forward in shaking off the early deficit and taking the first four singles decision for a 4-1 clinch before taking the match 5-2.
That 'never-say-die' attitude has been present throughout the program the past three seasons and was on full display once again for a group that has accomplished just as much the past two seasons as it had during the Division I Independent days (2007-2012).
In that singles-opening run, sophomore ace
Amadeo Blasco collected another straight-set win 6-1, 6-2 over counterpart Vini da Silva. Sunday's win was No. 28 on the season for Blasco, who has nearly reached the 30-win mark heading into the Big South Conference Tournament eight days from now.
Meanwhile, junior and 23-match winner
Julian Farthing collected a three-set 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory over counterpart Dan Dumitrascu. His three-set win at court No. 4 was one of three Lancer victories that went a full three sets as the team went 3-1 in such matches Sunday.
Following Farthing's lead, freshman
Valentin Popescu inched closer to the 20-win mark with his 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 victory at the third slot over Flavian Fernandez. The left-handed freshman from Romania continues to impress in his Lancer debut season with 12 spring wins and 18 overall.
Fellow freshman
Daniel Hernandez continued his recent hot streak with his second straight-set win of the weekend, this time coming in a 6-3, 6-1 margin over Ignacio Guevel. Hernandez's victory at court No. 6 put the match on ice for the 5-2 final after Norfolk State's Andres Alcaraz outlasted Longwood's
Raisei Sakai 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 at the second court.
With the conclusion of the regular season, the Lancers will await to see their seeding and opponent for the upcoming Big South Tournament. Last season, Longwood fell 4-1 to Winthrop in the quarterfinals after earning a program record No. 4 seed.
