Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – First-place Campbell jumped out to a big lead early and never turned back to take the series from Longwood by a 15-1 final Saturday at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
The top team in the Big South, Campbell (22-17, 14-3 Big South) proved too much for Longwood (13-24, 6-11 Big South) behind an offense that exploded for 15 runs on 12 hits.
Michael Horrell (6-1) tied for the Big South's lead in wins with the victory behind his fourth quality start. Horrell held the Lancers to one run in 7.0 innings of work, scattering three hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts in the victory.
Cody Boydstun (2-5) was tagged with the loss after surrendering 12 runs, 10 earned, on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts in the outing.
Out of the bullpen
Jon Peterson put together a solid outing for his fourth scoreless outing. The junior left-hander tossed 4.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts and held Campbell to one hit and two walks.
Longwood captain
Sammy Miller put forth another effort in which he reached safely multiple times. Miller reached on a hustle-double in the first inning as the senior has reached safely in 14 consecutive games. Miller went 1-for-3 and was hit by pitch to reach safely a pair of times Saturday and is hitting .479 (23-for-48) during his hot streak.
Mitchell also extended his reached base streak to nine in the game, reaching on a pair of walks.
Campbell scored three runs in the first, three in the second, and six runs in the third inning to build an insurmountable lead for the Lancers. Longwood got on the board in the second inning behind
Grant Keller, who is on a tear with a batting average of .333 (10-for-30) in the month of April. Keller started the frame with a walk and got to third base on a double by
Ryan Shull.
Jawan McAllister got the Lancers on the board with a sacrifice fly to plate Keller, who finished the game with pair of walks and one run scored.
Matthew Barefoot and Tyler Anshaw did the bulk of the damage for Campbell, combining to go 5-for-10 with six RBI. Barefoot followed up on his 2-for-5 and three RBI night Friday with a 2-for-4 game and three RBI, picking up a double and a home run. Anshaw went 3-for-6 with three RBI, tagging one of Campbell's three home runs.
The series concludes with the reigning Big South Pitcher of the Week,
Tyler Morgan (2-2, 5.29 ERA), on the mound fresh off his complete game shutout and 13 strikeouts last weekend. Morgan will take the bump opposite of Campbell right-hander Brandon Jenkins (1-1, 5.02 ERA). First pitch in the finale is set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
