Softball Splits Thursday Twin Bill, Knock Off Red-Hot JMU

Lancers Score Four in Seventh to Earn 7-4 Win Over JMU, Fall to East Carolina 4-3

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Three-hit days from Jordan Clark, Destiny Martinez and Kaylynn Batten and eight innings of four-run softball from junior right-hander Sydney Gay led the Longwood softball team to a doubleheader split Thursday from the Hawai'i Spring Fling.

After falling to East Carolina 4-3 in walkoff fashion in the first game, Longwood (10-8) fought back to erase a 4-3 deficit with a four-run seventh inning to knock off a red-hot James Madison team 7-4 and earn the split. That loss handed the Dukes their first back-to-back losses since the 2016 Harrisonburg Super Regional, as JMU entered the day on 12-game win streak.

Gay (6-5) tossed a complete game in the loss to the Pirates (8-15) before coming on in relief against the Dukes (15-4) to throw 1.1 innings striking out three to pick up her team-leading sixth win of the season.

At the plate, Clark – who made her season debut in the leadoff spot Wednesday – turned in a 3-for-3 effort against James Madison with one RBI and walk while scoring three runs while Batten had a two-hit day, none bigger than her three-run home run in the top of the seventh to flip the script and topple the Dukes.

Batten's three-run homer accounted for three of her team-leading four RBI, extending her team-lead to 15 on the season.

Sophomore second baseman Destiny Martinez continued her red-hot stretch, extending her hitting streak to four straight games to raise her batting average to a team-leading .350

Freshman shortstop Leah Powell got in on the Lancer power surge as she collected her first collegiate home run, a two-run blast that knotted the score at 3-3 against ECU before the Pirates walked it off in the bottom of the seventh.

Clark also belted a solo home run as she opened the second contest with a leadoff bomb, giving the Lancers an early 1-0 lead. Clark's home run was her second in as many at-bats versus James Madison starter Odicci Alexander, dating back to the last matchup between the two rivals last weekend at the Aloha Tournament.

East Carolina 4, Longwood 3

Led by four one-run innings from Mary Williams and a two-hit day by Tate McClellan, East Carolina scored four runs over the game's final four innings to erase a 1-0 Longwood lead and upend the Lancers 4-3 in walkoff fashion.

Longwood outhit the Pirates 7-5 on the day, but late life from the Pirates was enough to give Longwood its second straight loss when collecting more hits than their opponent after falling to BYU 2-1 the previous night.

"I know we can play better than we did against ECU. Our best bet moving forward is to bond together as players and coaches to compete and show how much we love the game by competing every inning," said 21st-year head coach Kathy Riley.

Gay tossed the complete game spinning 6.2 innings giving up four runs, three earned taking the loss.

Longwood saw multi-hit performances in the first of the twin bill from sophomore second baseman Destiny Martinez and freshman shortstop Leah Powell while senior Glenn Walters delivered her first triple of the season as part of a 1-for-3 game.

The Lancers' big hit came on Powell's two-run jack in the seventh as the freshman also scored two runs in the loss.

Williams picked up the win for East Carolina as she tossed 4.0 innings in the win allowing just one run and two hits while striking out three Longwood batters.

Longwood 7, James Madison 4

Led by multi-hit games from Jordan Clark and Kaylynn Batten Longwood bounced back with a 7-4 victory over rival James Madison as the bats came alive for 11 hits, two coming via the long ball.

Clark started the game with a bang as she homered off Odicci Alexander for a second-consecutive at-bat before Batten finished off the comeback effort with her three-run blast that gave the Lancers a lead in the seventh, one they wouldn't relinquish.

Batten's bomb off Alexander was her second in as many days as the tandem of Batten and Clark lead the team with three each this season.

Two-time Big South Freshman of the Week Sydney Backstrom tossed 3.1 innings of no-decision softball surrendering four runs, all earned while picking up a strikeout. Backstrom was relieved by senior Sydney Mundell who tossed 2.1 shutout innings before Gay (6-5) twirled the final 1.1 innings to pick up the win.

Junior third baseman Jessica Smith had another two-hit day as she drove in a run for her 10th RBI of the season, joining Batten as the lone two Lancers with double digit RBI.

Alexander (9-2) took the loss for James Madison as she surrender all seven runs, five earned on 11 hits while striking out seven Lancer hitters.
