Lancers Ride New Rotation to Dominant Win at UMES

Longwood Dispatches UMES 6-1 in Second Road Matchup of Weekend

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – An outright dominant performance on the road saw the Longwood women's tennis team drop just four total games to UMES en route to a 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the Bay Country Racquet Club.

In their second road matchup of the weekend, Longwood (6-7, 0-6 Big South) used a five-player rotation to take all five singles matchups in straight sets and claim the doubles point with matching 6-1 victories.

The win improves Longwood to 6-1 in non-conference play this spring and is potentially one of two wins on the day for the Lancers, who will head back to Hampton on the way home from Maryland to conclude a match that was halted at 3-3 due to rain Friday.

Longwood's one-sided win Saturday came by way of a new-look singles lineup in which freshman Yulia Almiron played at No. 1 for the second straight match and sophomore Jamie Breunig ascended to the No. 2 slot for the first time this season. Almiron easily handled her UMES counterpart Sarah Adewumi 6-1, 6-0 at that top position, while Breunig made quick work of UMES' Michal Kittrel 6-0, 6-0 in her season debut at No. 2.

Those two also paired up in doubles play for the first time this season and won their bout at the No. 2 position 6-1, matching their No. 1 counterparts Marija Venta and Kaori Terunuma who also picked up a 6-1 doubles win at No.1.

Breunig's 6-0, 6-0 win was one of three singles sweeps for Longwood on the afternoon. Freshman Kaori Terunuma took down Kenza Katema 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, and classmate Tanja Skalda extended her team-leading spring record to 8-3 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Melanie Copey at No. 5.

Lancer sophomore Marija Venta also earned a 6-0, 6-1 singles win of her own over Alese Brown at the No. 3 position.

Following the outcome of Longwood's follow-up trip to Hampton Saturday, the Lancers will return home to resume Big South play against rival Liberty Tuesday, April 3. That will be the first of five straight home bouts for Longwood, which will continue the following Saturday, April 7, against conference rival Gardner-Webb.
