Prolific Passing Pushes Lancers To 12-10 Nonconference Win

Longwood Outduels Saint Francis Sunday Behind Efficient Offense

FARMVILLE, Va. – Fresh off an eight-assist performance Tuesday at East Carolina, senior attacker Riley Dolan dished out five more helping the Longwood women's lacrosse team take down Saint Francis 12-10 Sunday ending nonconference play on a high note from Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.

After tying the program record Tuesday on eight assists, Dolan kept the prolific passing display going with her two-goal, five-assist afternoon Sunday. Over the course of two games, Dolan scored five goals and assisted on 13 more for 18 total points, a career-best stretch for the Northfield, N.J., native.

"I think everyone's gaining a lot of confidence right now and working really well together, which is getting other people open," said Dolan, who already has 49 points through 10 contests in 2018, besting her career-high 47 last season. "We're finishing our shots. Kaitlin Luccarelli has been playing lights-out – as well as Dana Joss. They make my job easier when they're open."

Sunday's five-assist performance also pushed Dolan into the nation's top spot, passing Winthrop's Kristin Shriver thanks to her 29 assists thus far.

Sophomores Molly Barkman and Kaitlin Luccarelli also had big scoring days as Barkman tallied three goals and three assists while Luccarelli finished with three goals on five shots.

"All of our sophomores are a year older and they're more confident. We also have a great senior class," Dolan said. "Everyone's doing their part on the field and it's just coming together really well."

Longwood (5-5) also got two goals each from senior captain Madison Stair and sophomore Dana Joss as Lexi Davis added a first-half assist.

After falling behind 2-1 nearly 10 minutes into the contest, the Lancers used a quick 3-0 spurt to claim their first lead of the day at 4-2 – one they would hold the rest of the way.

"Our execution in certain areas simply wasn't sharp enough today, but a number of players hustled and worked to regain possessions when we turned it over," said sixth-year head coach Elaine Jones. "We have done a nice job with our mental toughness and battling in the last few games against some really scrappy teams so I'm happy about that."

Barkman, who entered Sunday as the team-leader in draw controls, won a team-high six more as fellow sophomore Joss won three and the trio of Hollyn Rostyer, Dolan and Luccraelli all won a draw to help Longwood win the midfield battle 12-11.

In the net, senior captain and goalkeeper Imani West turned in another double-digit save afternoon stopping 12 Red Flash shots and collecting a team-high four ground balls.

West leads the country in saves once again with 113 through 10 contests, giving the Lancers two of the nation's premier players at their position. West has eight double-digit save contests including the first six to open the 2018 season.

Just like they have all season, the Lancers used timely passes and open looks assisting nine times on their 12 goals. Their 7.2 assists per game leads the Big South entering conference play.

Longwood's efficient offensive performance was enough to outduel Saint Francis (4-6) who was led by Sarah Mahon's four-goal performance in just her third game of the season. Joining Mahon in the scoring column were Jessica Fischetti, Jessica Mazzur and Amanda Heidt each scoring two goals.

Sunday's home win gives the Lancers two-consecutive as well as four of the past five entering conference play Saturday.

"These past two wins build a lot of momentum going into conference play," Dolan Said. "Our scheme showed we can keep our lead and at East Carolina and it showed that we can come back from a deficit. I think that we're only carrying our momentum forward into conference play and we're really excited."

Jones added, "We have a few days to prepare before we open our conference schedule, wo we will use that time wisely."

First draw between the Lancers and Eagles goes up at 2 p.m. from Rock Hill, S.C.
