MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – East Carolina forced the Longwood women's basketball team into a season-high 25 turnovers, as the Lancers fell to the Pirates 61-52 at the Carolinas Challenge Wednesday night inside the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
The Pirates (8-2) earned their third straight win, as Lashonda Monk and Jade Lewis each finished in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Lewis added eight rebounds, as the East Carolina defense forced the Lancers into 25 turnovers and outscored Longwood by a 25-9 margin off turnovers.
East Carolina overcame a 17-point effort from
Dayna Rouse, along with 11 points from
Stephanie Guihon and eight points, nine rebounds from
Kristina Antonenko.
"We didn't manage their offensive rebounding as well as we could've at the end," said Longwood head coach
Rebecca Tillett. "Shot selection and turnovers also hurt us heading down the stretch. Against a team that's 7-2 like they were, we had to take care of the ball. We had to limit offensive rebounds and we had to take the right shots, which we did for most of the game."
Rouse scored in double figures for the second straight game and for the sixth time in eight games, as she finished with 17 points to score 15-plus points for the fourth time this season. Rouse, who came into the night leading the Big South with a .538 field-goal percentage and ranks among the top 30 in the NCAA, finished the night 6-of-11 from the floor and added eight rebounds in 38 minutes
"All coaches love consistency and knowing what you're going to get from a player," Tillett said. "Dayna's certainly provided that for us. Both offensively and her demeanor with her teammates and with the staff in taking in information, she's an eager learner and she's shown that progress so far this season."
Stephanie Guihon scored in double figures, finishing the night with 11 points while adding an assist and two steals to match last season. With her fourth game in double figures, Guihon matches her total from a season ago as a freshman.
The Lancers will have less than 48 hours before returning to the court Friday, Dec. 21at UNCW. The opening tip is set for 7 p.m. inside Trask Coliseum.
"Today was a step forward in terms of following the game plan but we have to follow it down to the very smallest details," Tillett said. "That's what we need to do to win which is the goal. So, it's a step forward but we aren't satisfied."
