HIGH POINT, N.C. – Reigning Big South Player of the Year Emma Bockrath scored 15 points to lead first-place High Point to their eighth straight win 62-41 over the Longwood women's basketball team Saturday afternoon inside the Millis Convocation Center.
Bockrath was one of two Panthers to finish in double figures, along with 10 points from Jiselle Thomas to overcome the Big South-leading seventh double-double of the season from Longwood's (3-14, 1-5 Big South)
Autumn Childress and a season-high 10 points from
Que King.
Longwood's defense was able to keep the Big South's top three-point shooting team at bay on the perimeter, limiting a Panthers squad that came into Saturday's game with a.404 shooting percentage from beyond the arc to a 3-of-14 (.214) performance to mark their worst in conference play.
"For three quarters, we held a very good offensive team to 38 points," said Longwood head coach
Bill Reinson. "To me, that shows that we're making a commitment to defending and rebounding. We got a little tired in the fourth quarter, so we need to sustain that effort the entire game."
That defensive performance helped the Lancers hold the Big South's top offensive team to its lowest scoring output through three quarters on the season of 38 points.
Bockrath, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, finished 6-of-11 from the floor while adding six rebounds, three assists and a steal in 24 minutes. The game for Bockrath, who ranks among the top 10 in the Big South in points, rebounds and assists, marked her 13th of the season in double figures to lead High Point (12-5, 6-0 Big South) to its longest winning streak since the 2011-12 season.
Meanwhile, Childress returned to the Longwood lineup after being sidelined against Radford Tuesday night. The 5-10 guard from Midlothian, Va., came off the bench to score 10 and grab 11 rebounds to collect her Big South-leading seventh double-double of the season. In her last four games, Childress has finished with double figure rebounds in three games and has averaged 10.8 boards per contest.
In addition, King, who received her first career start, scored in double figures for the first time in her collegiate career, finishing with 10 points while also collecting three assists.
"Our offensive struggles continue," Reinson said. "You won't win any games when you commit 31 turnovers. Many of those were unforced, which is concerning. We need to get in sync offensively. That requires finding a rotation that works and having them play together more."
Up next, Longwood will prepare for the latest edition of the Route 460 rivalry with Liberty, welcoming the Flames to Farmville Tuesday, Jan 23 for a 7 p.m. opening tip inside Willett Hall. That game is slated to be broadcast on the Big South Network.
