CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a matchup with host school Queens, sophomore co-ace
Marija Venta picked up her third singles win of the season in second round action from the Queen City Scramble Saturday afternoon.
After falling to her Wofford counterpart Friday, Venta bounced back for a straight-set 7-5, 6-3 over the Royals' senior Carlotta Nassi for the Lancers' first win of the weekend. Venta's two-set victory follows her 2-1 weekend in singles play last weekend at Elon in which she took the back draw of Flight A singles against opponents from historically-tough tennis programs.
Venta will look to grab yet another 2-1 weekend Sunday when the Lancers take on Big South and Commonwealth rival Radford in a potential conference match preview. Last season, the Lancers took down the Highlanders twice on their way to a second Big South quarterfinals appearance since 2012-13, their first year as a member of the league.
Following Venta's win at court No. 1, host Queens responded to take the other four courts in straight-set fashion behind wins from Yana Fleyer, Aliaksandra Davidzenka, Caroline Nielsen and Ana Bolson.
In doubles play, Queens took both matches as the duo of Caroline Nielsen/Hannah Lehfeldt took down the tandem of Breunig/Venta while Ana Bolson/Isabel Fornies outlasted Longwood's Candiotto/Terunuma by a 7-5 score.
Sunday's showdown with the Highlanders concludes the four-team tournament before the Lancers receive almost a month off to prepare for the ITA Atlantic Regionals in mid-October.
