ELON, N.C. – The Longwood women's tennis team was led by veteran sophomore
Jamie Breunig in the season debut of the new-look Lancer lineup during the opening stages of the Elon Fall Invitational Friday afternoon.
Breunig, who spent her entire freshman season in the top two slots of the lineup, and returns as the most experienced Lancer on the roster, picked up the first win of her sophomore campaign in a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 downing of Appalachian State's Becca Moore.
Freshmen
Julia Candiotto and
Kaori Terunuma, who made their Lancer debuts, took first round sets by default before taking part in extra matches later in the evening.
Joining Breunig from that dynamic one-two punch from last season's lineup is
Marija Venta, who battled against Kirsten Ward from the CAA power Elon before falling 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles action, the Lancers fought valiantly but couldn't breakthrough as the tandem of Xandra Fougner/Sarah Horn deterred the best chance with an 8-7(2) decision over Longwood's Breunig/Venta.
Saturday's action picks up at 9 a.m. as Breunig, Candiotto and Terunuma look to continue competing in the winner's bracket of their respective draws while Venta and Nzewi look to capitalize in their back draws and further their stay in singles play.
