Hurricanes Hold Off Lancers 5-0 in Finale

Nationally-Ranked Miami Takes Nonconference Bout in Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Nationally-ranked and ACC power Miami showcased their power five prowess in a late-night affair Friday 5-0 over the Longwood women's tennis team, completing a morning-night doubleheader in two different states.

After falling in the Big South Championships quarterfinals Friday morning to top-seeded Winthrop in Winston-Salem, N.C., the Lancers made the trek to Blacksburg for a season finale with the Hurricanes.

Friday night's action was also the second of a twin bill slate for Miami (10-10), who took a 5-2 decision against Virginia Tech earlier in the afternoon. The 5-0 Hurricane victory ended Longwood's (7-15) season after their quarterfinals appearance for the first time since the 2013 season, their first as a member of the Big South Conference.

Miami two seed Silvia Fuentes clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lancer counterpart Jamie Breunig while ace and 38th ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba took down Longwood freshman Marija Venta by 6-0, 6-2 scores.

The Hurricanes got out to an early 1-0 lead with wins on doubles courts one and two 6-0, 6-1, setting the tone for singles play.

Coming into Friday's doubleheader, the Lancers had won four of their past five matches including two 4-3 rallies against Big South rival Radford, both matches led by singles wins by the three Lancer seniors Paloma Alatorre, Anna Pelak and Mason Thomas.

In the 2017 late season push, the Lancers picked up a combined 16 singles wins with 12 coming from their senior class Alatorre, Pelak and Thomas. Those three seniors leave Longwood as one of the winningest classes in the Division I-era, picking up a combined 106 singles wins across four seasons in Farmville with 28 coming in their final campaign donning the Lancer blue and white.

A product of Buchanan Dam, Texas, Thomas finishes her career with an even 50 singles wins and place herself T-7th on the all-time singles wins list in program history.

Alatorre ends her Lancer career on with 32 career singles victories at almost every spot in the Lancer rotation during her time at Longwood and ???????Pelak, who was named to her second-straight Big South All-Academic Team in 2017, finishes her Longwood career with 27 career singles wins and a 6-3 record over her last nine matches for the blue and white.

With the conclusion of its season, Longwood will return three players next season who are all currently freshmen or sophomores. Freshmen Breunig and Venta, who split time between courts one and two, return for a second season in Farmville while sophomore Fallon Burger returns after winning a career-best nine matches in 2017 splitting time between courts four, five and six.
