FARMVILLE, Va. – A 22-point performance from Cortney Storey, capped by a go-ahead free throw with 0.6 seconds left in regulation, was enough for Presbyterian to knock off the Longwood women's basketball team 63-62 on senior day Saturday afternoon inside Willett Hall.
After a game-winning jumper attempt from
Ciarah Bennett fell short with 2.6 seconds, a Presbyterian timeout gave the Blue Hose the ball across the timeline and Storey was able to draw a foul while driving to the basket. The junior made one of her two free throws to provide the cushion needed to complete the comeback victory for the Blue Hose.
In a game that saw 12 ties and 16 lead changes throughout, Presbyterian (12-17, 10-8 Big South) battled back from their largest deficit, overcoming an eight-point margin over the final 3:17 to steal a win and finish with a winning record in conference play under first-year head coach Todd Steelman.
The loss for Longwood (4-25, 1-17 Big South) marks their fifth straight to close out the regular season, as the Lancers were limited to just seven bodies throughout. Saturday's game was the final inside Willett Hall for seniors
Treasure Avery,
Eboni Gilliam,
Emily Nylen and
Brenna Robbins who were recognized in a pregame ceremony.
Storey's 22 points and nine assists were enough to outlast a determined Gilliam, who finished with 23 on 8-of-13 shooting in her swan song. The game for Gilliam marked the fourth of her two seasons at Longwood with 20-plus points, as the 23 points was the most she's scored inside Willett Hall.
Sophomore
Ciarah Bennett pulled down a career-best nine rebounds in the loss, one shy of her first career double-double, as she finished with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
One game after becoming the first player in Longwood's Division I era to enter the program's all-time top 10 in single season assists, junior
Micaela Ellis added five to her total Saturday to join Caren Forbes (1987-88) eighth-place overall with 126.
With the conference tournament to be played, Ellis moves to within seven assists of joining Longwood's all-time top-five, as she continues to lead the Big South with 4.3 per game. In addition, Longwood's junior captain ranks among the top 10 in the league in steals and first 36.5 minutes per game.
With Longwood and Winthrop splitting the season series, the Lancers' seeding for the Big South Championship will be determined once the updated RPI is unveiled Sunday afternoon. The highest ranked team, according to the RPI, will be the higher seeded team in the tournament.
Once the final seeding is determined, Longwood will play either Gardner-Webb or UNC Asheville Thursday night in the opening round of the Big South Championship held at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va.
