Lancers Turn Away Hawks in 7-0 Sweep

Straight-Set Wins All Around Fuel Victory

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood women's tennis team made quick work of Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday morning, winning 7-0 behind straight-set wins at each court in both singles and doubles.

Longwood got things rolling early with 6-0 wins at each doubles court, with the tandems of Jamie Breunig/Fallon Burger at court No. 1, Paloma Alatorre/Marija Venta at two and Anna Pelak/Mason Thomas in the third slot.

Friday's sweep at doubles was the second-consecutive match the Lancers took all three courts after doing so against St. Mary's College of Maryland.

The Lancers carried that momentum into singles play, dominating at all six courts in the win. Each Lancer at courts two-through-six, with the exception of Alatorre, took 6-0, 6-0 wins. Meanwhile at the top-line, Breunig pulled out the straight-set win 6-0, 6-1 to clinch, pushing the score to 4-0 at the time and clinching the team victory.

"I think it definitely helped our confidence getting a couple of wins under us, and hopefully it follows through on Sunday," said Breunig, who has spent the entire the entire season as Lancers' No. 1 seed as a freshman.

A pair of Lancers, Pelak and Venta, pushed their winning streaks to three-straight with sweeps at two and five, while the rest of the squad has won two of their past three individual matches.

"It feels good that our work paid off and that we can play consistently throughout the whole match and get some 6-0's," said Venta, the Lancers' No. 2 seed.

With the convincing win, Longwood is now 3-2 against teams from the state of Maryland.

Longwood stays at home to face another MEAC foe in Morgan State on Sunday, March 19. Match time is set for 12 p.m. from the H-SC Tennis Courts.
